Doris Elaine Foster

Gone but not forgotten, Doris Elaine Foster, 80, passed away at 9:06 a.m. on Saturday, December 23, 2023 following an extended illness at her residence in North Manchester, Indiana – the same day in which her husband was born.

Doris was a farmer’s daughter, a wife, a mother, a caretaker and your best friend.  She was born on July 4, 1943, the daughter of David Schindler and Irene (Affolder) Schindler.  In 1961, she was in the graduating class from Geneva High School.

In 1962, she was united in marriage to Richard Foster at the West Missionary Church in Berne.  The newlyweds resided at Selfridge Air Force Base on the banks of Lake St. Claire just north of Detroit, Michigan.  Following Richard’s completion of his service to the United States Air Force as an air traffic controller, they returned to Berne.  Richard preceded her in death on February 2, 1982.

Richard and Doris were the owners of Hilldale Motel and Mobile Home Park in Wabash for 46 years, raising four children who also were devoted helpers to the family.  They include daughter, Kathleen (Curt) Hullinger of North Manchester, IN; son, Jeffery (Stephanie) Foster of LaFontaine, IN; daughter, Jennifer Foster of North Manchester, IN; son, Michael (Toni) Foster of Warsaw, IN.  Her children blessed her with six grandchildren:  Clarence Hullinger, Kathryn Hullinger, Mitchell Foster, Allie Foster, Waverly Foster, and Adilynn Foster.  She is also survived by her oldest brother, Arthur Schindler, of Berne and sister-in-law, Carolyn Schindler.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents along with her husband and also two brothers, William Schindler and Gary Schindler.

Funeral services for Doris will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2023 at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Yager – Kirchhofer Chapel in Berne with Life Celebrant Dave McIntire officiating.  Burial will follow the service at MRE Cemetery in Berne next to her husband.  Friends and family will be received from 12:30 p.m. Thursday until the time of the service also at the funeral home.
