William H. Brown, Sr., 96, died on January 11, 2019 at Kingston Care Center in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. He was preceded in death by wives Annis May Brown (1984) and Kay Brown (2003), a son David Charles (1951), and his sister, Mary Mills.
Bill was the son of W. Guy Brown and Gertrude Butler Brown and was born on June 7, 1922 in Decatur, Indiana. After graduation from Decatur High School, Bill joined the U.S. Navy and served during WW II from 1941 to 1945. Immediately after discharge from the Navy, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service and held many positions in Pensacola, Florida, Battle Creek, Michigan, before returning to Decatur, Indiana, where he served until retiring as Superintendent of Mails in Decatur. Many will also remember Bill as the proprietor of W. H. Brown and Sons, Coin, Stamp and Hobby Shop on Madison St. in Decatur.
Bill was a long-time member of First Methodist Church of Decatur and, more recently, Broadway Christian Church in Ft. Wayne where his many years of volunteer work for its Inasmuch Ministry were recognized with a special service award. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Badger Brown, Ft. Wayne; children, Nora L. Robbins, (Mike) of Ft. Wayne; William H. Brown, Jr. (Susan) of Nineveh, IN; Steven G. Brown (Melissa) of Punta Gorda, FL; grandchildren, Chris Kauffman (Heather) of Roanoke, IN; Jill Wiencek (Anthony) of Raleigh, NC; Amy Winters (Joseph) of Franklin, IN; seven great-grandchildren; step-children Patti Murzyn (Ron) , Brian Badger (LaNora), Susan McLeod (Hartley), and Scott Badger(Shelly); 10 step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren .
Bill will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grand-father, great-grandfather and a man fully dedicated to meeting the mission of Jesus Christ and helping those most in need.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 14, 2019 at Broadway Christian Church, 910 Broadway Street, Ft. Wayne, IN with friends and family being received from 9:30 a.m. to service time at the church. Burial will follow the services in Decatur Cemetery for family only.
Friends and family will be received on Sunday, from 12 Noon to 3:00 p.m. Sunday in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, 520 N. 2 nd Street, Decatur, IN.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to InAsMuch Ministries thru Broadway Christian Church, Ft. Wayne.
