Wayne H. Kirchner, 74, of Decatur, Indiana, passed away on February 15, 2023 at Adams Memorial Hospital.
He was born October 6, 1948 in Decatur, Indiana, the son of the late Wilbur Kirchner and the late Marcella (Bleeke) Kirchner. Wayne was united in marriage to Dorothy Bohnke on June 16, 1973 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Decatur and she survives.
Wayne was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Decatur where he faithfully arrived 30 minutes prior to services.
Wayne retired from General Electric following over 35 years of service. He was first assigned to the Decatur Plant before moving to the Fort Wayne plant where he concluded his career.
Wayne served his country by enlisting in the Indiana Air National Guard and serving with the 122 nd Tactical Fighter Wing in Fort Wayne where he was charged with fueling the fighter jets.
Wayne was very proud of his family. He cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren. In his spare time, he was an accomplished gardener. He felt relaxed and at peace when cutting wood, being outside, attending antique tractor shows, and loved trains. Wayne also helped his friends and family farm, lending his “expertise” as needed.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Dorothy Kirchner of Decatur, Indiana; daughter. Carolyn (Matt) Voshell of Decatur, Indiana; son, Kevin (Jamie) Kirchner of Decatur, Indiana; son Keith Kirchner of Decatur, Indiana; brother, Thomas Kirchner of Monroe, Indiana; four granddaughters; Adalie Voshell, Carley Kirchner, Kayla Kirchner, and Avery Kirchner.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Shiela Myers, brother, Timothy Kirchner, and sister-in-law, Linda Kirchner.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 20, 2023, at Zion Lutheran Church, Decatur, Indiana with Pastor James Voorman and Pastor Zach Oedewaldt officiating. Interment will follow in the Decatur Cemetery.
Friends and family will be received from 12 Noon to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home – Decatur and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
Preferred memorials can be made to Zion Lutheran Church, Decatur or Heart to Heart Hospice.
