Warren Daniel “Barney” Sprunger, 92, of Berne, Indiana went home to be with his Lord at Monday afternoon, February 11, 2019 at Swiss Village.
He was born on June 10, 1926 in Adams County, Indiana to Howard & Helen (Long) Sprunger. He was united in marriage 71 1/2 years ago to Cleora Nussbaum on June 15, 1947 at the Mennonite Church in Berne.
Barney served his country in the United States Air Force during WWII in the Pacific. He was a tail gunner on a B-29.
He retired in 1991 as the maintenance manager at Swiss Village. He had previously worked at Habegger Builder Supply, Home Dairy Dispatcher, Standard Oil, and Berne Highway Hatchery.
Barney was a member of the Grace Bible Church in Berne where he was a choir member and served as a deacon/trustee and the church treasurer. He was a Sunday school teacher to the boy’s class, a youth leader, and helped with the maintenance of the grounds and landscaping. He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America in Berne and had received his Eagle Scout Title with Three Palms award.
Barney enjoyed “WORK” including woodworking, picture framing, landscaping, and fixing things. He was known as the “fix-it-man”.
He is survived by his wife, Cleora Sprunger of Berne; son, Gary (Joy) Sprunger of Robertsdale, AL; two daughters, Amy (Tom) Lynch of Linn Grove & Kae (Darrell) Kiefer of Berne; two brothers, Burl Sprunger of Decatur & Earl (Marinel) Sprunger of Berne; sister, Carol Lehman of Fort Wayne; sister-in-law, Galen Sprunger of Berne; 11 grandchildren, Faith Sprunger, Dr. Philip (Sarah) Sprunger, Stephen (Anna) Sprunger, Mark (Deana) Sprunger, Dr. Hope Sprunger, Glen (Cara) Lynch, Lisa (Marvin) Nussbaum, Dawn (Russ) Snively, Kimberly (Shane) Lehman, Natalie (Pastor Steve) Harness & Jared (Jessica) Kiefer; & 24 great-grandchildren.
Barney was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bruce Sprunger.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Yager-Kirchhofer Chapel in Berne with Pastor Mike Wertenberger officiating. Burial will follow at MRE Cemetery with Military Graveside Honors by American Legion Post #468 of Berne.
Family & friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 15, 2019 at Swiss Village Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday.
Preferred memorials are to the Samaritan Fund at Swiss Village.
