Verne E. Tussing, 83, of Monroeville, Indiana passed away Wednesday morning, April 22, 2020, at his residence following an illness of over a year.
He was born on March 25, 1937in Deshler Ohio, Henry County to Verne Earl and Leora Hazel (Crawford) Tussing. Verne was united in marriage to Ann Romaker on March 27, 1959 Watseka, Illinois.
Verne was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Convoy, Ohio and the Indiana State Teachers Association.
He was employed by the East Allen County Schools as the Band Director at Heritage High School for 29 years, retiring in June of 1997. During his time at Heritage, he would also support the parochial schools in the area by assisting with their band programs. In addition, he was employed by Mynett Music in Fort Wayne, where he would evaluate and match students to the most appropriate instrument possible. Prior to teaching at Heritage, he was also a band director at Antwerp, Ohio in the public school and also at Wellington, Ohio for three years where he completed his Master’s Degree in Instrumental Music at Kent State University. Following his retirement, Verne continued teaching at the St. Louis Besancon Catholic School and the St. Rose Catholic School in Monroeville.
Verne enjoyed golfing all day long….every day. As an accomplished musician, being current in brass instruments and encouraging young people to become involved with music was important to Verne. He also participated in the Deshler, Ohio Community Band where he often played the Baritone.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ann Tussing of Monroeville, Indiana; daughter, Lydia Vetter of Woodburn, Indiana; son, David Tussing of Monroeville, Indiana; son, Vincent (Jane) Tussing of Convoy, Ohio; daughter, Julie (Tad) Nagy of Fort Wayne, Indiana; son-in-law, Jerry (Teena) Castleman of Monroeville, Indiana; brother, John (Alice) Tussing of Deshler, Ohio; 17 grandchildren, Nicholas (Amanda) Vetter, Elizabeth (Troy) Hileman, Megan (Michael) Crouse, Amanda (Jake) Penner, Emily (Jake) Wilson, Dustin (Chloe) Vetter, Elise (fiancé Harrison Sheldon) Vetter, Brianna (Jake) Meyers, Hannah Castleman, Joshua Nagy, Ben Castleman, Anthony Nagy, Claire Castleman, Andrea Tussing, Daniel Tussing, Isaac Nagy, and Olivia Nagy; and nine great-grandchildren.
Verne was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda L. Castleman in 2007; a son-in-law, Dennis Vetter in 2008; and a great grandchild, Adam Crouse in 2012.
Due to guidelines established by the State of Indiana in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private family service will held at Monroeville Memorial Cemetery.
