Thomas A. Jones

Thomas A. Jones, 83, of Berne, Indiana passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Swiss Village in Berne.

He was born on November 3, 1939, in Berne, Indiana to the late Rawley and Florine (Wittwer) Jones.

On May 6, 1961, Thomas married his high school sweetheart, Beth A. Sprunger in Berne, Indiana, and she survives.

Tom attended The Bridge Community Church in Berne, Indiana and was a member of the First Mennonite Church, where he served as trustee for many years.

He was a 1957 graduate of Berne French High School.  Following his graduation, he worked at Moser Motors as a mechanic.  Shortly thereafter, he began a partnership with his brother, RD, in the operation of Jones Brothers.  After a period of years, he became the sole owner of the business and renamed it Tom Jones Construction and Excavating…a career that lasted over 50 years, and would have continued if able.

He loved to collect a mix of antique and newer excavating toys.  Tom enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He spent many hours at his shop tinkering on old equipment and reselling it.  His idea of a vacation was “working” at the lake cottage on Oliver Lake.  He spent many enjoyable breaks at “the corner” having coffee with the guys.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Beth Jones of Berne, Indiana; son, Thomas (Divina) Jones, Jr of Berne, Indiana; daughter, Tami Yoder of Berne, Indiana; daughter, Taya (Brad) Yoder of Berne, Indiana; two brothers, Rawley “RD” Jones of Geneva, Indiana, and Kerry (Deb) Jones of Berne, Indiana; grandchildren, Chelsea (Brandon) Gill, Channing (Phil) Goodwin, Jansen (Mike Cardamone) Yoder, Heath (Lauren) Jones, Caylie Yoder, Hunter (Alex) Alanis and Cale Yoder; five great-grandchildren, Warner, Adelyn, Bennett, Gideon, Daniel.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Yager-Kirchhoffer Chapel in Berne with Pastor Eric Lehman officiating. Burial will follow at M.R.E. Cemetery in Berne, Indiana

Family and friends will be received from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Yager-Kirchhofer Chapel in Berne, and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Preferred memorials are to The Bridge Community Church.
