Sfc Jerry D. Miller

SFC Jerry D. Miller, 79, of Decatur, Indiana passed away Thursday, May 14, 2020 at his residence surrounded by his family and his family pet, Bridget. He was born on January 13, 1941 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Paul Everett Miller and the late Vivian Margaret (Myers) Pherson. Jerry was united in marriage to Karen E. Whittenbarger on May 11, 1963, at Decatur Assembly of God. They were married 57 years before Jerry’s passing.

He was member of the Countryside Church of the Nazarene in Ohio City, Ohio. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #43 in Decatur, where he was active in the Color Guard.

Jerry served his country as a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army.

He worked as a Military member in the United States Army for 20 years retiring in 1978. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Jerry completed his education and was employed by International Harvester along with Decatur Casting, before his health forced him into retirement.

Jerry liked to work with his hands. Woodworking, hunting, camping and working on cars were activities he enjoyed in his retirement. Watching racing and football and being with his family provided him much enjoyment.

Survivors include his wife, Karen E. Miller of Decatur, Indiana; daughter, Teresa (Greg) Voglewede of Decatur, Indiana; son, Tony (Teresa) Miller of Fort Wayne, Indiana; daughter, Angela (Mitch) Baumann of Decatur, Indiana; nephew, Todd (Cynthia) Lehman of Arcola, Indiana; nine grandchildren, Jason (Chelsey) Voglewede, Aaron (Riley Gaunt) Voglewede, Brandon (Demi Brunner) Voglewede, Miranda (Nick) Huffine, Cameron Voglewede, Amanda (Anthony Riecke) Miller, Paige Miller, Madilyn Baumann, and Jacob Baumann; seven great-grandchildren, Chandler Voglewede, Clare Voglewede, Tate & Brooklynn Wilson, Keaton Voglewede, Addison Wagner, Rylann Riecke and baby Voglewede arriving in October.

Jerry was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Lehman; and a niece, Tandy Lehman.

Friends will be received from 3-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur. Due to guidelines established by the State of Indiana in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be allowing up to 25 people in the funeral home at a time. We appreciate your cooperation.

A private family service will be held, Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur with Pastor Carol Tumbleson-Evans officiating. You are invited to visit and “like” the Facebook page for Zwick & Jahn where a video will be posted of his service. Interment will follow in the Decatur Cemetery with Military graveside honors being conducted by the American Legion Post #43 Color Guard.

Preferred memorials can be given to Countryside Church of the Nazarene, ACCF – Angel Fund Cancer, or the American Legion Post #43 Color Guard.
