Sam Baumann, 78, of Decatur, Indiana passed away Sunday evening, March 30, 2025, at his residence following an illness spanning the past year.

He was born on June 6, 1946 in Decatur, Indiana to Ernest and Maxine (Bailer) Baumann. On August 17, 1968, Sam was united in marriage to Judy A. Bultemeier at Zion Lutheran Church, Friedheim.

Following his marriage to Judy, Sam became a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Friedheim in Decatur where he served in many capacities and in various offices.

Sam was a 1964 graduate of Decatur High School where he was on the first wrestling team to compete in the high school’s history. He worked at International Harvester in Fort Wayne for ten years and was a self-employed wrecker driver and mechanic with Baumann Wrecker Service and Secure Auto Parts in Decatur. Sam also served as a volunteer fire fighter with the Decatur and Preble Fire Departments.

Sam was an avid fisherman who spent countless hours catching the big one! He enjoyed playing golf, bowling, and playing cards of any kind. In these activities, he had a very competitive nature that was genetic. His devotion to his family extended to square dancing, traveling, and spending time with them. He was also known to tinker with anything that came his way, earning the nickname “Mr. Fix It”.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judy A. (Bultemeier) Baumann of Decatur, Indiana; three sons, Chad A. (Jill) Baumann and Mitch (Angie) Baumann both of Decatur, Indiana and Trevor (Meghan) Baumann of Cumming, Georgia; daughter, Gretchen Hudson of Decatur, Indiana; ten grandchildren, Alex Baumann, Madilyn (Cole) Cunningham, Jacob Baumann, Abrielle Hudson, Melina Baumann, Sophia Baumann, Carsten Hudson, Ashlyn Baumann, Brogan Hudson, and Brooklyn Moose; two brothers, Steven (Donna) Baumann of Decatur, Indiana and Jerry (Judy) Baumann of Alachua, Florida; and sister-in-law, Jo Ann Baumann of Decatur, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Baumann and Richard (Laura) Baumann and a sister, Patricia (Steven) Lytle.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2025, at Zion Lutheran Church, Friedheim with Pastor Matthew Ulmer officiating. Burial will follow at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Friedheim.

Family and friends will be received from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2025 at Zion Lutheran Church, Friedheim, 10653 N 550 W, Decatur and from 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. prior to services on Monday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Zion Lutheran Church, Friedheim Wyneken Endowment Fund (checks payable to Zion – Friedheim).

Arrangements are by Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home of Decatur, Indiana.
