Roger William Selking, 80, of Columbus, Indiana passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield, Indiana.
He was born on December 26, 1943, in Decatur, Indiana to the late William A. Selking and Jennie (Erxleben) Selking.
Roger was united in marriage to Melissa Kipfer on August 7, 1970, at First United Methodist Church in Decatur, Indiana.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in New Palestine, Indiana and was also attending St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Columbus, Indiana. Roger was a member of the American Legion Post #182 in New Palestine, Indiana.
Roger graduated from Monmouth High School in 1962. Following his graduation, he was employed at GE as an electrician for 28 years at the Decatur small motor manufacturing plant. After GE closed, he got his Associates Degree in Applied Science and a Bachelor of Science Degree, where he used his new skills by working for Navistar in Indianapolis for 10+ years before retiring. In his retirement years, he really didn’t sit still. He worked for TSA at the Indianapolis Airport and also at the Auto Dealers Exchange where he was proud of his ability in being able to drive a manual transmission vehicle.
Roger served in the United States Air Force as an Airman First Class during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged following his service.
Roger greatly enjoyed singing in the church choir. He cherished spending time with family at Big Long Lake at the cottage. In his spare time, he liked going to the gun range, bowling, golfing and traveling.
Roger is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Melissa Selking of Columbus, Indiana; daughter, Laura (Mike) Hayes of League City, Texas; son, Chris (Staci) Selking of Columbus, Indiana; son, Doug (Rachel) Selking of Carthage, North Carolina; sister, Mariann Koeneman of New Haven, Indiana; brother, Donald Selking of Evansville, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Chloe Selking, Brody Selking, Nora Selking, Jack Selking, Josie Selking, Nathan Davis and Alayne Davis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Virgene Sanders and Dorothy Zeller.
A funeral service for Roger will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2024 at St. Paul Lutheran Church – Preble, 4510 W 750 N, Decatur, IN 46733. Burial will follow the service at the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery – Preble with military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Post #43 Color Guard.
Friends and family will be received from 3-7 p.m. on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, 520 N. 2nd Street, Decatur, IN and also one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
Preferred memorials are to Worship Anew or Donor’s Choice.
