Reverend Dr. Veryl C. Roth, 80, of Huntington, Indiana passed away Saturday morning, February 22, 2020, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born on December 27, 1939, in Archbold, Ohio to the late Kenneth A. Roth and the late Florence (Rupp) Roth. He was united in marriage to Norma Burkholder on August 27, 1960 in Archbold, OH and she survives.
Veryl accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior in 1949, and was baptized in the Evangelical Mennonite Church in 1950. He served the Lord in many capacities, serving churches in many states including, Massachusetts, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Colorado. The first church he served out of seminary was Berne Evangelical Church, where he will be buried. Other Indiana churches he pastored include, Avalon Missionary Church in Fort Wayne, Union Church in Huntington, and several United Methodist Churches including, Keystone, Christ Church and Seminary in Roanoke and Pilchers Chapel. He was actively involved in the local communities serving on school boards, Chamber of Commerce, High School Accountability committee, Rotary, Youth for Christ, and Ministerial Associations. He was the Executive Chairman of Western Slope Satellite Committee for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Crusade in Denver, Colorado. He also helped found and direct the “5th Quarter” Youth Ministries in several communities. Veryl and his wife conducted marriage and family enrichment seminars and also directed youth camps at Miracle Camp in Lawton, Michigan.
He graduated from Archbold High School, received the following higher education degrees: Bachelor’s Degree from Taylor University in Upland, Indiana; Bachelors of Divinity from Gordon Divinity School from Hamilton, Massachusetts; Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling, St. Francis College in Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Doctorate of Ministry from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Additional studies were done at Adrian College, Capital University, Free University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Central Michigan University and Northern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Veryl and Norma loved to travel which included trips to Europe, Israel, Lebanon, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece and Puerto Rico. In addition to leisure travel, mission trips were to, Russia, Haiti, Kenya and seven months in the Dominican Republic.
His hobbies included cutting wood, landscaping, drawing plans and building: homes, churches, various church camp buildings and office buildings and fishing with the grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a big thank you to Southern Care Hospice for their loving care, especially Samantha, Jo, John, and Greg.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Norma Roth of Huntington, Indiana; son, Rev. Gregory (Debra) Roth of Huntington, Indiana; daughter, Cynthia (Chris) Johnson of Potomac Falls, Virginia; son, David (fiancé, Anna St. Peter) Roth of Delta, Colorado; son, Nathan (Amber) Roth, M.D. of Zionsville, Indiana; sister, LuAnn (Ron) Fielitz of Jefferson, Tennessee; brother, Dr. Samuel (Evangeline) Roth of Ada, Michigan; brother, Virgil (Lynn) Roth, J.D. of Pasadena, California; sister, Mary Ellen (Ed) Fambrough of Titusville, Florida; nine grandchildren, SPC (P) Clarissa Arndt, Kristin (Vander) Warner, Hannah (Wesley) Kays, Rachel Roth, Isaac Roth, Noelle Roth, Asa St. Peter, Hope Roth, and Rebecca Roth; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Kays and Naomi Kays.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2020, at Berne Evangelical Church located at 5481 S. 450 W. Berne, Indiana with Rev. Gregory Roth officiating. Burial will follow in Berne Evangelical Church Cemetery.
Family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2020, at the Trinity United Methodist Church located at 530 Guilford St. Huntington, Indiana and also from 10-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at Berne Evangelical Church.
Preferred memorials can be given to The Veryl C. Roth Scholarship Fund at Taylor University or Miracle Camp in Lawton, Michigan.
