Marjorie Helene von Gunten, 99, of Berne, Indiana went home to her Lord and Savior on Monday, March 20, 2023, at her home.
Marjorie and her husband, Edward Dale von Gunten were united in marriage on March 23, 1944, in Berne, Indiana. They celebrated 65 years of marriage before he passed away on October 29, 2009. Most of their married life was spent on the von Gunten Hoosier Homestead dairy and later chicken farm east of Berne before retiring in Berne. She was an active member of the First Mennonite Church and was involved in several committee positions over the years. Her family treasures the many oil paintings that Marjorie did in her retirement, including the painting of the von Gunten family’s farmyard when Edward was a child in the 1920s and 1930s.
She is survived by her two sons, Neill (Edith) von Gunten of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and Stan (Dianne) of rural Berne, Indiana; grandchildren in Canada, Jenny (Warren) Jutzi, Kevin (Nancy) von Gunten, Karin (Richard) Dyck, and Kathi (Greg) Wiebe; grandchildren in Indiana, Mark (Jennifer) von Gunten, Todd (Jen) von Gunten, and Chad (Danette) von Gunten; great-grandchildren in Canada, Justin (Morgan) and Caleb (Emily) Jutzi; Vicki (Joey), Brittany (Charles), Darren, and Johnny von Gunten; Kevin (Tiyet) von Gunten, Jr.; Anthony, Carly, and Abigail Dyck; Tyler and Alex Wiebe; great-grandchildren in Indiana, Natasha (Tony) Mosser; Mitchell von Gunten; Olivia (Justin) Ayers; Isabel and Aidan von Gunten; Amanda (Garland) Ivy and Amber (Paul) Fick; great-great-grandchildren in Canada, August Dyck; Kayden, Vykel, Deanna, and Robbie von Gunten; Ezekiel and Anastasia Monkman; great-great-grandchildren in Indiana, Noah and Alexa Mosser, Milo Ivy, Abram Fick, and Judy Venderley; and two foster grandchildren, Teresa and Rosie James.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her foster daughter, Marie Sudduth; foster granddaughter, Lori Sudduth; adoptive parents, Rufus and Cora Sprunger, and numerous siblings and relatives from the Branch and Sprunger families.
A funeral service for Marjorie will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 27, 2023, at the First Mennonite Church in Berne, Indiana with Pastor Jim Schwartz officiating. Burial will follow at M.R.E. Cemetery of rural Berne.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 2023, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Yager-Kirchhofer Chapel in Berne, Indiana. The family will receive residents of Swiss Village from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 2023, at the Swiss Village Chapel and one hour prior to service at the church on Monday morning.
Preferred memorials can be given to the First Mennonite Church – Missions or Stillwater Hospice.
