Mable “Jean” Hammond, 95, of Decatur, Indiana passed away Sunday, June 20, 2021, at her residence surrounded by her family.
She was born on July 13, 1925 in Adams County, Indiana to the late John H. Chilcote and late Minnie A. (Ross) Chilcote.
Jean was united in marriage to Herman W. Hammond on September 25, 1945. He preceded her in death on March 15, 2012. He had been waiting for this day for her to join him in Heaven.
She was attended the Decatur Church of God for her entire life where she sang and cared for children for many years in the nursery.
Jean was a homemaker. In addition to her devotion in raising her family, she also was employed at Hammond’s Market in Decatur.
She loved her family dearly. Her life was spent loving, serving others and being a devoted woman to her husband. She was also the best cook and pie maker without question. She was very active in visiting the sick and shut-ins until she no longer was able. In her earlier years, she also taught herself to paint and she made ceramic creations.
Jean is survived by her four sons, David L. (Carol) Hammond of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Gary W. (Shelly) Hammond of Normal, Illinois, Dr. Ronald L. (Linda) Hammond of Decatur, Indiana, Gregory A. (Cindy) Hammond of Fort. Myers, Florida; a daughter, Debra R. (David) Burke of Decatur, Indiana; 11 grandchildren, Mike (Jen) Hammond, Mark (Tonya) Hammond, Jenny Hammond, Chris (Amanda) Hammond, Allyson (Ryan) Feasel, Ashley (Zach) Grey, Ryan (Missy) Hammond, Meagan Hammond, Amanda (Craig) Lohr, Christa (Joe) Nes-Iadicola, and Shawn (Stacy) Burke; 24 Great Grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jack, Becca, Natalie, Annie, Evelyn, Christian, Mia, Colston, Lydia, Easton, Josie, Kairos, Kanaan, Kayson, Stella, Ainslee, Fletcher, Beckett, Jordon, Remi, Trig, Augi, River, with one on the way.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Hammond; a great granddaughter, Angel; three brothers, Roy, Floyd and Delvia Chilcote; and three sisters, Nellie Chilcote, Grace V. McBride, and Ruth T. Hill.
Funeral services for Jean will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 25, 2021 at the Decatur Church of God with Rev. Robert Brink officiating. Burial will take place at Decatur Cemetery.
Friends and family will be received from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 24, 2021, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur and also one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
Preferred memorials are to Decatur Church of God.
Arrangements are by Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, in Decatur, Indiana.
