Lowell “Bill” William Griner, 79, of Decatur, Indiana passed away Sunday, April 10, 2022, at Adams Woodcrest in Decatur, Indiana.
He was born on February 23, 1943 in St. Mary’s, Ohio to the late Walter L. Griner and late Beatrice C. (Huston) Griner.
Bill was united in marriage to Bernita P. Purk on December 5, 1969 in Dixon, Indiana.
He served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany from 1960-1962 during the Berlin Crisis and then was in the Army Reserves from 1962-1964.
Bill was employed a Decatur Casting for 31 years, retiring in 2000 and he worked at Alphabet in Portland, Indiana from 2001-2007 and he delivered the Democrat Newspaper.
He loved fishing, bowling, men’s softball. He umpired for Decatur Juniors Girls softball at Hanna Nuttman Park and coached the Decatur Senior Girls League for the Peterson Grain team. Above all he loved his family. On December 5, 2021 after 52 years of marriage Bill and Bernita renewed their wedding vows.
Bill is survived by his wife, Bernita Griner of Decatur, Indiana; a son, Murlin (Kelly)Griner of Decatur, Indiana; a daughter, Corina (Lon Linker) Lister of Decatur, Indiana; a brother, Perl E. “Ed” (Ellen) Griner of Rockford, Ohio; two sisters, Con (Joseph) Tebbe and Mary (Pat) Browder both of Celina, Ohio; five grandchildren, Samantha (Jon) Sorg, Shawntel Griner, Zacary Lister, Shelby Griner and Alex Singleton; seven great-grandchildren, Brooklynn Sorg, Remington Sorg and Bennett Sorg; Payton Myers and Zachariah Ruland; Jamison Lister and Roxanne Griner and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Darlene Binkley, Judith Francis, Patricia Walter and Beverly Griner; and one brother, Glen “Butch” Griner.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur with Pastor Daniel York officiating. Military Graveside Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #43 Color Guard at I.O.O. F. Cemetery in Convoy, Ohio.
Friends and family will be received from 2-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, April 18, 2022, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Tuesday.
Preferred memorials are to Heartland Hospice or Heart to Heart Hospice.
Arrangements are by Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, in Decatur, Indiana.
