Lester Egly

Lester Egly, 89, of Glenlivet Way, Raleigh, North Carolina and formerly of Berne, Indiana passed away passed peacefully from this life into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at his son’s residence. 

He was born on January 5, 1936, in Adams County, Indiana to the late Valentine Abraham and Ida (Klopfenstein) Egly. Lester was united in marriage to Theda Corrine Heller and she preceded him in death on April 25, 1985, after 28 years of marriage. Lester married Carole Suzanne Baker and she preceded him in death on December 26, 2024, after 38 years of marriage. 

While living in Indiana, Lester was a member of the West Missionary Church in Berne, Indiana.

When he moved to South Carolina, Lester was a member of the North Hills Community Church in Taylors, South Carolina. 

Lester was employed by Meshberger Brother’s Stone Corporation from 1954 to 2000, now known as US Aggregates on Hwy 218. He was also employed by Walmart Corporation in Greenville, South Carolina working in Sporting Goods department from 2001 to 2008, retiring after 72 years of total employment.

Lester was active in a variety of church ministries and was the church treasurer for several decades. He had a wonderful tenor voice and sang in the church choir, vocal ensembles, quartets, and duets. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching college basketball. He loved doing bird-whistles and telling terrible dad-jokes that he made up on his own.

Survivors include his son, Philip Lee (Teresa) Egly of Glenlivet Way, Raleigh, North Carolina; two granddaughters, Grace Elizabeth and Abigail Rose Egly.

In addition to his parents and both wives, Lester was preceded in death by his daughter, Melody Mae on August 14, 1968 due to a motor vehicle accident; brother, Albert in 1987; four sisters, Violet in 2013, Chloetta in 1991, Glennavere in 2023 and Carolyn in 2007.

A funeral service for Lester will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at West Missionary Church with Pastor Keith Rupp officiating. Burial will follow at the M.R.E. Cemetery. 

Friends and family will be received one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
