Leroy K. Sprunger, 92, of Berne, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2023, at Swiss Village in Berne.
Leroy was born to Emil and Mathilda (Hirschy) Sprunger on May 25, 1930, in Berne, Indiana. He was married June 25, 1961, to Carolyn J. Haas in Van Orin, IL.
A devoted husband and father, Leroy was a lifelong member of the First Missionary Church where he served many years as youth leader, deacon, and Sunday School teacher. In the 1950s, he was instrumental in bringing in Youth for Christ to the Berne area.
The youngest of twelve children, Leroy grew up in Berne where he helped his family with chores, and enjoyed sports, including high school basketball. In 1948, he graduated from Berne High School and began work with the Berne Equity. In the 1950s, Leroy joined the Indiana National Guard and was activated into Fort Wayne unit 122nd P51’s squadron. In 1952, Leroy began his 38-year career with the U.S. Postal Service serving as mail carrier and later as Postmaster.
In his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and worked part-time with Habegger Ace Hardware and volunteered with Lutheran Hospital System working in their mail department. He loved spending time with people and enjoyed helping others.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Carolyn; his two children, Doug of Arlington, VA; Rosetta (Paul) J. Yoder of Berne, IN; four grandchildren, Brianna (Kit) Phoon and Zachary (Camille) Yoder, Tiffany (Ben) DeVoe, and Marissa Yoder; and two great-grandchildren, Winry Phoon and Cade Yoder; and Leroy’s sister Miriam I. Sprunger of Berne, IN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Norman, Raymond, Melvin, Tillman, Eli, and Clifford, and sisters, Minnie Basinger, Edith Minger, Esther Biberstein, Inez Patterson.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 3, 2023, at First Missionary Church in Berne with Pastor Rick Schwartz and Pastor Dathen Foust officiating. Burial will follow at MRE Cemetery in Berne.
The family will receive residents of Swiss Village from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2023, in the Swiss Village Chapel. Family and friends will be received from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2023, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Yager-Kirchhofer Chapel in Berne, and also one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to First Missionary Church, Gideon’s International, and the Swiss Village Samaritan Fund.
