Leila J. “Jean” Swygart, 87, of Monroeville, Indiana passed away Sunday morning, June 30, 2019, at Adams Heritage.
Jean was born on December 21, 1931 in Hicksville, Ohio to Elmer M. & Violet F. (Carver) Bassett. She was united in marriage to Weldon W. Reas on December 20, 1950 and he preceded her in death on January 2, 2000. On July 7, 2000, she married Jack Swygart and he preceded her in death on November 24, 2005.
She was a former member of the Monroeville Nazarene Church.
Jean was a homemaker and the owner of Squeeze Inn Restaurant for 16 years from March of 1963 to March of 1979.
She was an avid IU basketball fan and loved to watch the Game Show Network. Jean enjoyed watching her great-grandsons basketball and baseball games. She was a great cook and known for her pie making skills.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda (David) Anderson of Monroeville; four step-sons, William (Linda) Swygart of Hoagland, John (Deb) Swygart of Monroeville, Kenny Swygart of South Bend & Dan Swygart of Ohio; two step-daughters-in-law, Michelle Swygart of Monroeville & Diane Swygart of Wakarusa; sister, Doris Ridgeway of Hicksville, OH; two brothers, Lee Bassett & Rex (Belva) Bassett both of Hicksville, OH; five grandchildren, Michael C. Anderson, Serena K. Anderson, Dr. Rebecca Baker-Palmer, Alan W. Anderson, & Stephanie A. Diss; & seven great-grandchildren, Piper, Dade, Daggar, Wilson, Michael, Carson, & Trevin.
Jean was preceded in death by a daughter, Nila Baker; two step-sons, Steve and Michael Swygart; seven brothers, Ralph, Gerald, Basil, Robert, Kenneth, Virgil, & Junior Bassett; & two sisters, Lois Humbarger & Alice Karnes.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2019, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville with Pastor Lynn Hart officiating. Burial will follow at Monroeville Memorial Cemetery.
Family & friends will be received from 1 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2019 at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday.
Preferred memorials are to Monroeville Fire Department or Monroeville EMS.
