LaVerne L. Thomas, 102, of Decatur, Indiana passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2022 at Ossian Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born on December 1, 1919 in Glasgow, Kentucky to the late Robert B. and Mary M. (Huddleston) Settles.
LaVerne was united in marriage to Lester L. Thomas on June 27, 1936, and he preceded her in death on February 17, 1992.
She was a parishioner at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur. A member of the Decatur Women of the Moose #1311and the American Legion Post #43 Auxiliary.
She was a homemaker. LaVerne along with Mary Baker were known as the “Candy Ladies” at St. Joseph Catholic School and was a longtime volunteer at the school.
She loved making scrapbooks of her grandchildren and their activities, art sketching, square dancing and enjoyed IU & UK basketball. LaVerne enjoyed fishing with her husband, Lester and always tried to catch the biggest fish. In her younger years she was musically inclined and played piano by ear.
Laverne is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Larry) Elzey of Decatur, Indiana; six grandchildren, Larry (Tanecia) Elzey, Patrick (Laura) Elzey, Robert (Mary) Beer, Danny (Brenda) Beer, Rod (Deb) Beer, Peggy (Dave) Rumschlag; 18 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Lester L. Thomas, LaVerne was preceded in death also by a daughter, Glenda Beer; a great-granddaughter, Megan Beer; two sisters, Virginia Janes and LaVada Furlong; and a foster brother, Jackie Campbell he was a POW in the Korean War.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 15, 2022, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church with Father David Ruppert officiating. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Decatur, Indiana.
Friends and family will be received from Noon – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 14, 2022, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Preferred memorials are to St. Joseph Catholic School or A.C.C.F – Cancer Fund.
Arrangements are by Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur, Indiana.
