Kent Leroy Girod , 79, of Decatur, Indiana passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
He was born on July 1, 1942, in Decatur, Indiana to the late Glen E. Girod and the late Irene M. (Peck) Girod. Kent was united in marriage to Charlsie M. Clark on May 29, 1965, at Salem Magley Church. They were married 56 wonderful years before Kent’s passing.
He proudly served in the Army Reserves for 16 years.
Kent was a member of Salem Magley Church for his entire life where he was a very active member of the church. He served his church as Trustee, Deacon, President, Vice President, Financial Secretary, cemetery committee member, and music board leader. Kent also served his church as a member of Children’s and Adult Choir, and the Men’s Quartet. He over saw along with his wife the Growing Hope Globally formerly known as Foods Resource Bank for 15 plus years, and helped pack Hero Meals in Adams County. Kent organized numerous mission trips through Indiana Kentucky Conference of the UCC. He was also a member of the Sprinkler Fitters Union Local #669 for 55 years.
Kent retired from Shambaugh and Sons in 2000 after starting the Sprinkler Division within the company in 1969. He also retired from farming and raising beef cattle in 1981. After retirement he started Papa’s Dream Service for the community, which he greatly enjoyed.
Kent had a deep love for his family, his children, grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He had a servant’s heart for Christ and his community.
Survivors include his wife, Charlsie Girod of Decatur, Indiana; daughter, Tammy (Troy) Heyerly of New Haven, Indiana; two sons, Kerry (Pamela) Girod of Fort Worth, Texas and Troy (Dr. Justina) Girod of Fort Wayne, Indiana; sister, Nyla (Richard “Dick”) Johnson of Decatur, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Andrew (Lydia) VanAsperen, Cieara (David) Wengerd, Kayla (Dustin) Gonzales, Karly Girod, Kinsey Girod, Jelena Girod, and Darsen Girod; and five great-grandchildren, Ehverr, and Holden VanAsperen; and Laithon, Blaikly and Emmitt Wengerd.
Kent was preceded in death by three brothers, Arno, Gery and Ronald Girod
Family and friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday July 28, 2021, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur and from 10-12 noon on Thursday at the church.
A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 2021, at Salem Magley Church located at 7494 N. 600 W. Decatur with Pastor Chris Hirschy officiating. Burial will follow in the Salem Magley Cemetery.
Preferred memorials can be given to Salem Magley Church Cemetery Fund or The American Heart Association.
