Judith Lee "Judy" Garwood, a longtime resident of Fort Wayne, Indiana, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2024, at the age of 83, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born on September 26, 1941, in Elwood, Indiana, to the late Edward & Charlotte (Burnes) Boggess. Judy has now gone to be with the Lord and her beloved husband, William E. "Bill" Garwood, just in time for Christmas. She was united in marriage to William “Bill” Garwood on June 14, 1958 and he preceded her in death on August 27, 2021.
Judy’s life was defined by her unwavering love for children and her dedication to nurturing those around her. She wore many hats throughout her life, most of which involved caring for and teaching children. Beginning in the 1980s, she worked as a preschool teacher off and on until her retirement in 2014. She also spent many years as a bus driver for East Allen County Schools (EACS). Known for her compassionate heart and fearless advocacy for the underdog, Judy touched countless lives with her kindness and strength. A devoted mother and grandmother, Judy raised five children and two grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter, Theresa Rehder of Woodburn, Indiana; two sons, Barry (Pam) Garwood of Maryville, Tennessee and Derek (Kristy) Garwood of Fishers, Indiana; two brothers, Dick (Julie) Boggess of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Edward (Ann) Boggess of New Albany, Indiana). Affectionately known as "Nanny," she was cherished by her family, including 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two children, Rebecca Jean Shuster and Steven M. Garwood and a sister, Nan Schmidt.
Her home was a place filled with love, laughter, crafts, songs, and stories—memories that will be treasured by all who knew her. Judy will be remembered as someone who embodied unconditional love and selflessness. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she shaped through her work and her family. In lieu of donations, the family encourages you to honor Judy’s memory by spending quality time with your children—sharing stories, creating crafts, or simply sitting together in conversation. Though deeply missed, Judy’s family takes comfort in knowing she is reunited with Billy and at peace. May her memory continue to inspire love and compassion in all who knew her.
A service of sharing and memories to remember Judy will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 27, 2024 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home – Decatur. Family and friends will be received from 1-3 p.m. prior to the start of the service on Friday at the funeral home.
