John Russell Cain, born on January 1, 1954, in Des Arc, Arkansas, passed away peacefully at his residence in Decatur on February 24, 2025.
John had a diverse career. His professional journey began as the owner-operator of BC Contractors, where he built a reputation for dedication and hard work. He later transitioned to serving as a corrections officer at various state prisons in Wisconsin and Indiana. Most recently, John was employed by FedEx in New Haven, Indiana, where he continued to touch the lives of those around him.
John was a member of the American Legion Post #43 in Decatur and the American Legion Post #43 Riders.
An avid motorcycle rider, John found pure joy in the freedom of the open road. He cherished every moment spent on his bike, often taking time to capture beautiful memories through photography. His extraordinary ability to connect with people meant that he never met a stranger and could effortlessly strike up a conversation, bringing warmth and friendliness wherever he went.
John's family was of utmost importance to him. He is survived by his son, David Cain of Decatur, Indiana; his daughters, Heather (Volker) Kurz of Oakland, California, and Heaven Mowbray of Winamac, Indiana; his brothers, Daniel Cain of Wauconda, Illinois, Christopher (Linda) Cain of Boulder, Colorado, and Douglas Cain of Boulder, Colorado; his sister, Carolyn (Glenn) Howard of Roanoke, Virginia; and four cherished grandchildren, Thomas Kurz, Nolan Kurz, Nikki Mowbray, and Frankie Mowbray.
John was predeceased by the mother of his children, Sue (Pinkerton) Anderson; his daughter, Jessica Cain; and his brother, William Cain.
John proudly served his country, being honorably discharged from the Army in May 1980 after attaining the rank of Captain. His contributions to his family, community, and country will be remembered and honored.
Visitation will be held at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur on March 2, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and again at Braman & Son Memorial Chapel in Knox on March 3, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. A graveside service will follow at Eagle Creek Cemetery in Knox at 3:00 PM
Memorials in John's name can be given to the American Legion Post #43 Color Guard through Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home.
John Russell Cain will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of kindness, adventure, and camaraderie will forever linger in the hearts of those he touched.
