Joan Hoffman, 90, of Hoagland, Indiana, passed away on Friday, October 20, 2023, at her residence.
She was born on November 29, 1932, in Decatur, Indiana to the late Martin H. Bultemeier and the late Ida (Reiter) Bultemeier.
Joan was united in marriage to Donald E. Hoffman on April 8, 1951, at Camp Stewart, Georgia, and he preceded her in death on January 19, 2018.
Joan was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church (Flatrock), where she served the Lord by singing in the choir, volunteering in the Altar Guild, and attending Bible Study. She was also an original member of the Decatur Lutheran Chorale, and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML).
Joan graduated from Monmouth High School in 1950, where she was a cheerleader and the valedictorian of her class. She then went on to be a bookkeeper for 18 years at East Allen County School System. She volunteered in the library at St. John Lutheran School, Flatrock, and was also a longtime volunteer at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. Joan also worked at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Homes for several years until July 2013.
Joan loved to gather with her family to bake cookies, play cards and games. She enjoyed reading books, doing needlework, and playing the piano. Joan could, when the opportunity presented itself, speak fluent German. She and Don loved to travel.
Survivors include her son, Ronald W. (Gail) Hoffman of Edinburgh, Indiana; son, James K. (JoAnne) Hoffman of Hoagland, Indiana; son, Matthew P. Hoffman of Greenfield, Indiana; sister, Betty Doctor of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; six grandchildren, Chris Hoffman, Beth Hoffman, Drew Hoffman, Claire (Hoffman) Roettgen, Reid Hoffman, and Connor Hoffman; and one great-grandson, Owen Johnson.
In addition to her parents and husband, Joan was preceded in death by her twin sons, Timothy and Thomas Hoffman in 1953; her daughter, Beth Anne Hoffman on March 31, 1971; her brother, Martin Bultemeier in 1970; and her sister, Carol Frosch on September 28, 2023.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church (Flatrock), Monroeville, with Pastor Douglas Christian officiating. Burial will follow in the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery (Flatrock).
Family and friends will be received from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Preferred memorials can be given to the Beth Anne Hoffman Scholarship Fund through St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church (Flatrock), or St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church (Flatrock).
