James Frederick “Fritz” Sprunger Sr., 71, of Bishopville, South Carolina passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 5, 2020, at his residence.
He was born on March 24, 1949 in Decatur, Indiana to James E. and Ruth E. (Montgomery) Sprunger. He was united in marriage to Barbara “Bobby” Boylin on August 14, 2010 in South Carolina and she survives.
Fritz was a 1968 graduate of South Adams High School and entered the US Army following graduation where he received an honorable discharge.
He was a former member of the First Mennonite Church in Berne, the American Legion Post #468 in Berne, and the Adams County Sheriff Department Reserves. He was a retired Berne fireman and was also a member of the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association.
Fritz retired from the Adams County Sheriff’s Department following 27 years of service. Prior to his career in law enforcement and following his military service, Fritz was employed at Gifford’s IGA for many years and is fondly remembered.
He greatly enjoyed watching any type of automotive racing, but his favorite race was the Indy 500.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara “Bobby” Sprunger of Bishopville, South Carolina; two daughters, Jennifer (Jason) Raugh and Dawn Grimm both of Berne, Indiana; son, James (Denise) Sprunger Jr. of Geneva, Indiana; sister, Becky Sprunger of Berne, Indiana; three step-sons, Darrell McKay of Texas, James (Darlene) Dellinger of Bishopville, South Carolina, and Steve Dellinger of Berne, Indiana; two step-daughters, Karen Ryf and Michelle Rodriguez both of Fort Wayne, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Kyle (Olivia) Raugh, Victoria Raugh, Keirstyn (Brody) Shane, William Grimm, Brendon Sprunger, Colton Sprunger, and Alena Sprunger; two step-grandchildren, Cody (Rachel) Grimm and Dylan Grimm; two great-grandchildren, Laken Shane and Hensley Shane; and Bobby’s 20 grandchildren also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Julie LaFollette; and two step-children, Bill Smith and Melissa Dellinger.
Visitation will take place Monday, July 20 from 7-9 p.m. at West Missionary Church, Berne. A memorial service will be held at the church Tuesday, July 21 at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be held at M.R.E. Cemetery with Pastor Keith Rupp presiding and military rites by the Berne American Legion.
Preferred memorials are to Berne Fire Department or the ACCF – Angel Fund Heart.
