Ivan “Sonny” Davis Jr., 79, of Decatur, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2022 at Adams Woodcrest, Decatur, Indiana.
He was born April 21, 1943 in San Angelo, Texas, the son of the late Ivan L. Davis Sr. and the late Waneta I. (McKean) Davis. Sonny was united in marriage to Janice R. Amweg on December 28, 1968, and on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 they would have celebrated 54 wonderful years together.
Sonny graduated from Decatur High School Class of 1961. He was an active member of the Decatur Church of God where he served on all the church boards, financial secretary, and the food pantry. He enjoyed helping with the Wild Game Night at the Decatur Church of God.
Sonny served his country in the United States Army during Vietnam War and was honorably discharged.
Sonny retired on August 1, 1997 following 36 years of service with General Electric in Decatur and Fort Wayne.
He loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, he was devoted to them all. He enjoyed teaching his family fishing, and hunting. He had a love of wood working, and made his family many handmade gifts. He was a handy man and gave his time on several mission trips for his church. Sonny had a servant’s heart… He always put others before himself.
Survivors include his wife, Janice “Jan” Davis of Decatur, Indiana; daughter, Gina (John Bentz) Anderson of Decatur, Indiana; daughter, Sherry (Brad) McCullough of Decatur, Indiana; son, Timothy (Arianne) Davis of Fort Wayne, Indiana, brother, Ronnie (Nancy Jo) Davis of Warren, Indiana; sisters-in-law, Nancy Davis of Decatur, Indiana, Linda Davis of Decatur, Indiana, and Brenda “Suzie” Hartman of Van Wert, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Zachary Anderson, Lacie (Arlo) Geels, Isaac Anderson, Cody (Maddie) McCullough, Quinton Davis, Peyton Davis, Delaney Davis, Celeste Davis, Gene Davis, and Merissa Davis; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lorie Davis; two great-grandsons, Timothy Austin Davis Jr. and Jackson Lawrence Geels; and three brothers Kenneth, Larry, and Jerry Davis.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 29, 2022, at the Decatur Church of God, in Decatur, Indiana with Pastor Brent Doster officiating. Burial will follow in Decatur Cemetery with military graveside honors being conducted by American Legion Post #43 Color Guard.
Family and friends will be received from 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.
Preferred memorials can be made to Alzheimer’s Association or Decatur Church of God.
