Howard D. Zuercher

Howard D. Zuercher, 95, of Berne, Indiana passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday evening, November 12, 2024, at his daughter’s residence in Eaton, Indiana.

He was born on April 1, 1929, in Berne, Indiana to the late David and Leona (Lehman) Zuercher. He was united in marriage to Dixie Lloyd on August 12, 1960, and she preceded him in death on November 15, 2016. 

Howard proudly served his country in the United States Army in the 59th Field Artillery Battalion during the Korean War.

He was a member of the Berne American Legion where he served in the Honor Guard. 

Howard started working at Berne Electric after coming home from the war. He transitioned to McIntosh, Inc. in the early 1960’s and was with the company until their closure. In his retirement, he worked at McDonald’s for ten years in Berne. 

He loved working with his hands and loved cutting wood, woodworking, and restoring his old pick-up truck. In his spare time, he enjoyed euchre and playing pool. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Howard is survived by his son, Bradley (Therese) Zuercher of Brighton, Colorado; daughter, Debra (Robert) Parr of Eaton, Indiana; daughter, Dana (David Zuercher) Schwartz of Berne, Indiana; sister, Marilyn Graham of South Roxana, Illinois; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild on the way.

He was preceded in death by a son, David Zuercher; six brothers, Cliffton Zuercher, James Zuercher, Arthur Zuercher, Gary Zuercher, Paul Zuercher, and Samuel Zuercher; and three sisters, Rowene Whitsler, Martha Schug and Pauline Solano.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at the Swiss Village Chapel in Berne, Indiana with Pastor Mike Wertenberger officiating. Burial will follow at M.R.E. Cemetery with military honors being rendered by the United States Army in conjunction with the American Legion Post #468.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, November 18, 2024, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Yager-Kirchhofer Chapel in Berne, Indiana, and one hour prior to the service at Swiss Village.

Preferred memorials can be given to the Northeast Indiana Honor Flight.
