Helene Hegerfeld, 92, of Hoagland, Indiana passed away Tuesday morning, May 16, 2023, at Adams Heritage in Monroeville, Indiana.
She was born on July 7, 1930 in Ossian, Indiana to Rufus and Marie (Witte) Werling. On October 4, 1952, Helene married Robert H. Hegerfeld at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian.
She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Fuelling. She was a former member of St. John Lutheran Church, Flatrock where she was involved in the Altar Guild and Evening Guild. She had also been involved with the Hoagland Area Advancement Association (HAAA).
Helene was a homemaker.
She greatly cherished the time spent with her family. She was a very talented baker and anticipated making her famous Christmas Cookies for her family every year. She was a meticulous homemaker, cleaning at every opportunity. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing, bowling, gardening, and polka dancing. With the help of Bob, she also canned the many products from their garden.
She is survived by her husband of 70 ½ years, Robert Hegerfeld of Hoagland, Indiana; daughter, Brenda (Bruce) Scherer of Hoagland, Indiana; three sons, Stanley (Nan) Hegerfeld of Hoagland, Indiana, David Hegerfeld of Decatur, Indiana, and Brent (Shari) Hegerfeld of Hoagland, Indiana; sister-in-law, Jackie Werling of Ossian, Indiana; brother-in-law, Richard Bultemeyer of Fort Wayne, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Casey (Shana) Scherer, Kari (Zeke) Schultz, Amy (Cole) Gutshall, Ashley (Bryan) Rumple, Abby Hegerfeld, Cody (Serena) Hegerfeld, Weston Hegerfeld; and 11 great-grandchildren, Gavin Scherer, Cooper Scherer, Clarke Schultz, Alana Gutshall, Carston Gutshall, Candon Gutshall, Kane Rumple, Aven Rumple, Paxton Hegerfeld; with two more on the way.
Helene was preceded in death by sisters, Erma (Richard) Henderson, Ruth Bultemeyer, and Iverna (Jerry) Burns; and brother, Wilmer Werling.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 19, 2023, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Fuelling with Pastor Leonard Tanksley officiating. Burial will follow at Concordia Cemetery in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Family and friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
Preferred memorials are to St. Peter Lutheran Church, Fuelling or Worship Anew.
