Hannah Ruth Schaadt-Amstutz

Hannah Ruth Schaadt-Amstutz, 92, of Berne, Indiana passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, April 30, 2023, at Swiss Village surrounded by her family.

She was born on July 17, 1930, in Bluffton, Indiana to the late Edgar Habegger and the late Savilla (Roth) Habegger. Hannah was united to marriage to Tom Schaadt on September 3, 1950, at Cross Community Church in Berne, and he preceded her in death on October 20, 1981. She then married Richard Amstutz on January 12, 2002, at First Missionary Church and he preceded her in death on July 17, 2022.

Hannah was a longtime faithful member of First Missionary Church in Berne and former member of Cross Community Church. One of her most notable acts of service within the church was her service to the funeral meal committee. Hannah’s deviled eggs and coleslaw were famous within her church family.

From a young age, a strong work ethic was instilled. Hannah was employed at Berco Overall for 10 years before working at CTS for 29 years. Additionally, she worked at the Amishville Restaurant, and cleaned offices and houses in Berne. However, her greatest joy was being a homemaker and serving both her family and the family of her husband Richard.

Family was at the heart of everything Hannah did. She cherished each moment spent with family, having a particular soft spot for her grandchildren. Hannah was a talented baker and family and friends always looked forward to delicious meals and treats. Among her many talents, she could cultivate beautiful flower gardens and vegetable garden.

Hannah is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Hedrick of LaFountain, Indiana; daughter, Jane (Ed) Millhouse of Garrett, Indiana; son, Henry (Penny) Schaadt of Berne, Indiana; daughter, Theresa Brown of Berne, Indiana; step-son, Michael Amstutz of Fort Wayne, Indiana; step-daughter, Deborah Wilson of Berne, Indiana; step-son, Randall (Michelle) Amstutz of Berne, Indiana; sister, Sara (Robert) Amstutz of Granada Hills, California; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren; and numerous step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Howard, Benjamin, Chester, Paul, and Alvin Habegger; and two sisters, Eldonna Amstutz and Catherine Smith.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2023, at First Missionary Church in Berne, Indiana with Pastor Rick Schwartz and Pastor Jim Schwartz officiating. Burial will follow at M.R.E. Cemetery of rural Berne, Indiana.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2023, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Yager-Kirchhofer Chapel in Berne and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
