Gerry M. Simons, 85, of Decatur, Indiana passed away Saturday morning, November 27 2021, at Adams Woodcrest.
He was born February 11, 1936 in Decatur, Indiana. His parents, Raymond and Dorothy (Hakes) Mertz, both preceded him in death. He was united in marriage to Marilynn L. Luginbill on April 6, 1958 and she preceded him in death on October 4, 2020.
Gerry served his country in the United States Marine Corp from 1954 to 1957.
He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Decatur and the American Legion Post #43.
Gerry retired May 2012 from North Adams Community Schools as a school bus driver with 41 1/2 years of service and had also worked at Central Soya in Decatur for 13 years.
He enjoyed sports including IU and Purdue basketball, L.A. Dodgers baseball, and the Indianapolis Colts.
He is survived by his daughter, Kelly L. (Jim) Burns of Fort Wayne, Indiana; sister, Bonnie Walters of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and four grandchildren, Tate (Ashley) Englehart, Tori (Matthew Melchi) Englehart, Kevin L. Simons II, and Tyra (Jon) Timmerman.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Kevin L. Simons and a brother, Dennis Mertz Sr.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 4, 2021, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur with Pastor Ernie Suman officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope (Willard) Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received from 10:00 a.m. until time of service on Saturday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church or American Legion Post #43.
