George J. Geyer, 87, of Decatur, Indiana passed away Monday, March 8, 2021, at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur, Indiana.
He was born on April 18, 1933, in Decatur, Indiana to the late Eli Geyer and the late Lydia (Steffen) Geyer. George married Barbara A. Hurst on September 5, 1953 and she preceded him in death on March 18, 2012. On November 21, 2015, he married Norma J. (Agler) Landis and she survives.
George served his country in the United States Army. On May 22, 2019, George was able to visit Washington DC with Honor Flight of NE Indiana accompanied by his guardian and son, Randy Geyer.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Friedheim; the Decatur Moose Lodge #1311; and the American Legion Post #43 in Decatur. He was also a member of the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years; where he had served as Fire Chief.
George retired in 1995 from Zurcher Tire in Monroe, Indiana with 15 years of service and prior to that he worked at Transport Motors Express in Fort Wayne for 22 years. After retiring from Zurchers, George worked at Gerbers #1 in Decatur for several years
He was an avid IU basketball fan and Indiana Pacers fan. He enjoyed spending time in his garden and taking care of his yard. George loved his grandkids and great-grandkids and loved watching them in sporting events and spending time with them.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Geyer of Decatur, Indiana; daughter, Angie (Dennis) Werling of Decatur, Indiana; three sons, Randy (Linda) Geyer, Kim I. (Julie Krick) Hurst, and Dave (Lori) Landis all of Decatur, Indiana; brother, Glen Geyer of Decatur; sister, Dorothy “Dot” Van Horn of Decatur, Indiana; nine grandchildren, Jason (Nicole) Werling, Kristie (Brian) Schlemmer, Holly (Keith) Gleason, Nicki (Mike) Wolford, Cori (Ethan) Brege, Avree Hurst, Zoee Hurst, Justin (Brittney) Landis and Caitlin (Travis) Kashner; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Loyal, Donald, Earl, Lester and Verlyn Geyer and three sisters, Lavera Heyerly, Ilean Steffen, and Berthelean Reinhard.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 12, 2021 at Zion Lutheran Church, Friedheim with Pastor Daniel Dahling officiating. Burial will follow at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Friedheim with Military Graveside Honors to be conducted by the American Legion Post #43 of Decatur.
Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 and 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 11, 2021, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Preferred memorials are to Zion Lutheran Church, Friedheim Expansion Fund or Honor Flight of NE Indiana.
Arrangements are by Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur, Indiana.
