Elroy R. Nussbaum , 91, of Berne, Indiana passed away Sunday, October 3, 2021, at Swiss Village in Berne, Indiana.
He was born on December 26, 1929 in Monroe, Indiana to the late Philip Nussbaum and the late Margaret (Steury) Nussbaum. Elroy was united in marriage to Edna Keeney on May 29, 1955, and she survives.
Elroy served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged following his tour of duty.
He was a lifelong member of Berne Evangelical Church in rural Berne. Being active in church was important to Elroy as he would frequently serve as an usher and deacon. Additionally, along with his wife, Edna, they served as youth directors as their children grew up.
Elroy retired in 1983 from International Harvester in Ft. Wayne (with his twin brother, Leroy). Following his retirement, he drove cars for Custom Car Care in Decatur.
Spending time with his family brought Elroy great enjoyment. He would play with his great-grandchildren on the floor and get to their level. He loved planting and maintaining a garden, watching NASCAR, his community, traveling throughout the United States with Edna, making homemade ice cream, ketchup on everything, and had a great sense of humor, telling jokes…over and over and over… An accomplishment he was proud of was participating in the Flat 50 Bicycle Race well into his 80’s. While at Swiss Village, he was very active in playing pool with other residents and other area nursing homes.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Edna I. Nussbaum of Berne, Indiana; three daughters, Cheryl L.(Rick) Hoffman of Johnstown, Colorado, Teresa D. (David) Unkefer of Kennesaw, Georgia, and Suzanne K. Loshe of Monroe, Indiana; brother, Philip J.
