Ed Alspaugh, 82, of Decatur, Indiana passed away Saturday, January 14, 2023, at his residence, following a five month battle with stage four cancer.
He was born on July 12, 1940, in Willshire, Ohio to the late Heber Harold Alspaugh and the late Inola F. (Miller) Alspaugh. On October 30, 1960, Ed married Sally S. Imel in Tocsin, Indiana and they shared almost 50 years together before her passing on August 1, 2010. He then married Cindy Smith on July 18, 2013, in Townsend, Tennessee and she preceded him in death on October 10, 2021.
He was a member of New Hope Church in Decatur and a previous member of the United Brethren Church in Decatur. He served on the United Brethren/Huntington College Missions Board. Ed was also a member of the American Legion Post #43. He served on the board of directors for Three Rivers Co-Op in Fort Wayne.
Ed was employed at International Harvester (Navistar) in Fort Wayne, Indiana with over 21 years of service. He retired in April 2009 from Fleetwood Motor Homes in Decatur with 20 years of service. Following his retirement, he worked part-time at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Homes from 2010 until his passing working funerals and taking care of maintenance. Ed also operated Ed’s Auto Sales and Repair from 1966 to 1986. He was also a licensed Auctioneer in the State of Indiana since 1980.
Ed was passionate for sharing his love for Jesus which reflected by helping people in need and serving on many local missions and served on the board for Camp Cotubic Youth Camp in Bellefontaine, Ohio. As part of his mission work he built many structures at Laurel Missions in Laurel Kentucky. Ed enjoyed musicals and music; especially gospel and the 50’s were his favorite. In his spare time, he fished, bowled, played softball, and refereed basketball games. Ed, along with his sons Curt and Clark were Commercial Metal Recyclers for many years. Ed was professionally skilled in using Duct Tape, spray paint, and black permanent markers. He loved playing cards and enjoyed socializing.
Ed went by many nicknames; Eddie, Hebbie, Heber J. Calhoun, “Special” Ed, 2b4, Fast Eddie, Col. H. E. Alspaugh, and Mafia Boss.
Survivors include his son, Curt (Carla) Alspaugh of Craigville, Indiana; three daughters, Collette (Jerry) Hurst, Colleen (Jim) Cole, and Claudine (Josh) Girard all of Decatur, Indiana; daughter-in-law, Machelle Alspaugh of Decatur, Indiana; sister, Jeanette (Jerry) Rumple of Decatur, Indiana; 11 Grandchildren, Celeste (Caleb) Rupel, Brittney (Dan) Killion, Brenna (Nick) Dillion, Cody (Courtney) Hurst, Caleb Hurst, Christopher (Audrey) Hurst, Cy (Maddi) Hurst, Chance (Nick) Leary, Callager Cole, Carston Girard, and Brant Girard; and 13 great-grandchildren, Adrianna, Ripley, Tyson, Naomi, Laini, Remington, Easton, Harlow, Oliver, Houston, Layla, Lizah, and Beckett
Ed was preceded in death by his beloved son, Clark Kent Alspaugh on July 25, 2022; and sister, Gloria (Don) Black.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 27, 2023, at New Hope Church in Decatur with Pastor Matt Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Decatur Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 26, 2023, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Preferred memorials can be given to New Hope Church.
Arrangements are by the Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.
