Denver Neuenschwander, 86, of Berne, Indiana passed away Wednesday afternoon, November 22, 2023, surrounded by family at Swiss Village in Berne.
He was born on September 7, 1937, at home in Wabash Township in Adams County, Indiana to the late Amos and Lavina C. (Amstutz) Neuenschwander. Denver married Bertha Mae Reiff on December 28, 1968, in Schwenksville Pennsylvania, and she preceded him in death on August 24, 2017.
Denver was a member of First Mennonite Church in Berne, where he served the Lord for over 20 years as an usher, and sang in the Men’s Chorus for 3 years under Dr. Freeman Burkhalter. He was a member of the Monroe Farm Bureau Co-Op and was the President for 10 years. Denver was also a member of the Berne Conservation Club.
He was a self-employed grain farmer. As a young man, he worked for Liechty Brothers in Berne. He then harvested grain in the West for nine years as a custom wheat cutter. He worked for two years in a Mennonite Mental Hospital in Kansas and worked part-time for twelve years for Swiss City Painter.
Denver enjoyed farming, traveling, trap shooting, and playing pool. He spent many days in a cabin in Cocraine Ontario Canada where he liked to fish and hunt. But his first love was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his son, Dan (Damara) Neuenschwander of Berne, Indiana; daughter, Becky (Matt) Buckingham of Berne, Indiana; daughter, Sara Neuenschwander of Galloway, Ohio; brother, Lloyd (Carol) Neuenschwander of Berne, Indiana; sister, Lorene (Dwight) Brenneman of Goshen, Indiana; and eight grandchildren, Tyler (Kelsie) Neuenschwander, Andrea (Eli) Mosier, Derick Neuenschwander, Solomon Neuenschwander, Boaz Neuenschwander, Kait (Daniel) Steffen, Zane Davis, and Logan Davis.
Denver was preceded in death by four brothers, Ellis, Joel, Ben, and Willie Neuenschwander; and one sister, Estella Nussbaum.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at First Mennonite Church in Berne, Indiana with Pastor Jeff Linthicum officiating. Burial will follow at the Berne Evangelical Mennonite Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, November 27, 2023, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Yager-Kirchhofer Chapel in Berne, Indiana, and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Preferred memorials can be given to M.C.C. Meat Canner.
