Christopher W. “Chris” Mowery, 49, of Decatur, Indiana passed away early Wednesday morning, January 4, 2023, at his residence following a five year battle with cancer.
He was born July 25, 1973 in Decatur, Indiana to John W. “Bill” Mowery and Kay (McMillion) Mowery.
Chris was united in marriage to Sara Blakey on October 4, 2003 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Decatur.
He is a member of Common Ground Church in Decatur where he participated in the basketball ministry for many years until his health prevented him from continuing. Through this ministry, he was able to engage men of all ages by providing a place to strengthen their faith by “…just having fun”. He also participated in small group bible studies within the church. Additionally, he was involved with the Messiah’s Misfits Christian Motorcycle group.
Chris was a Physical Therapy Assistant at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur until his health prevented him from continuing. He had an Associate Degree in Computer Aided Drafting from Brown-Mackie College; a Bachelor of Science in General Education from St. Francis University in Fort Wayne; and an Associate Degree in Physical Therapy Assistant.
Chris was a devoted husband and father to his family. He loved the outdoors, especially snowmobiling in Michigan every winter. He hunted pheasant in the fall with his pheasant buddies, held the annual Mowery hog roast for friends and family, enjoyed camping at Oabache with his family, and just being around people. As he was growing up, he also joined his dad in truck pulling during the summers.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Mowery of Decatur, Indiana; three daughters, Grace Mowery, Cassie Mowery, and Lilyann Mowery all at home; mother, Kay Mowery of Decatur, Indiana; paternal grandmother, Esther Mowery of Decatur, Indiana; brother, Paul R. Mowery of Decatur, Indiana; sister, Lisa Mowery of Decatur, Indiana; brother, Robert Mowery of Craigville, Indiana; father and mother-in-law, Marlin “Marty” and Nancy Blakey of Decatur, Indiana; brother-in-law, Marc (Dr. Theresa) Blakey of Orlando, Florida; and his hunting daughter, Anastasia.
He was preceded in death by his father, John W. “Bill” Mowery on January 2, 2023; paternal grandfather, Bill Mowery; maternal grandmother, Georgia McMillion; and brother-in-law, Christopher Blakey.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2023 at Common Ground Church in Decatur with Pastor Kevin Stirratt officiating. Burial will follow at Decatur Cemetery.
Family and friends will be 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 13, 2023, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur and on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. prior to services at the church.
Preferred memorials are to the Children’s Education Fund (checks payable to Sara Mowery).
