Carolyn J. Sprunger, 87, of Berne, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at Stillwater Hospice Home in Fort Wayne, IN.
Carolyn was born to Emerson and Clara (Schuneman) Haas on November 28, 1936, in LaMoille, IL. She was the youngest of three girls and enjoyed growing up on the farm. She attended LaMoille High School where she was active in choir and singing groups. After graduation, she attended the Katherine Shaw Bethea School of Nursing in Dixon, IL where she received her nursing degree and then finished with her BA in Sociology at Taylor University in 1961.
She married Leroy K. Sprunger on June 25, 1961, in Van Orin, IL, and settled in Berne, IN where she then became a nurse in the family practice of Robert L. Boze for over thirty years. Both she and Leroy were active members of First Missionary Church in Berne where Carolyn enjoyed teaching Sunday School class for first graders for many years. She loved spending time with people and enjoyed helping others.
In her retirement years, she enjoyed traveling with Leroy; volunteering with Lutheran Hospital System; and many activities such as quilting, helping with Hearts and Hands, and the Ladies Auxiliary of Gideon’s International.
Survivors include her two children, Doug of Arlington, VA; Rosetta (Paul) Yoder of Berne, IN; four grandchildren, Marissa Yoder of Berne; Zachary (Camille) Yoder of Parrish, FL, Tiffany (Ben) DeVoe of Ossian, IN, and Brianna (Kit) Phoon of Bradenton, FL. She was especially fond of her four great grandchildren, Winry & Mia Phoon and Cade & Macie Yoder.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters, Ethel (Valier) Amstutz and Florence (William) Bentley.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 15 at First Missionary Church in Berne with Pastor Dathen Foust officiating. Burial will follow at MRE Cemetery in Berne.
A viewing will be held at Swiss Village from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 14th in the Swiss Village Auditorium. Family and friends will also be received one hour prior to the service at First Missionary Church.
Memorials may be made to First Missionary Church, Gideon’s International, and the Swiss Village Samaritan Fund.
