Byron W. Liechty, 93, of Berne, Indiana went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday morning, August 28, 2024, at Swiss Village in Berne.
He was born on June 16, 1931, in Berne, Indiana to the late Paul E. and Sarah Anna (Felber) Liechty. Bryon was united in marriage to Ruth Mary Lehman on October 8, 1955, and she preceded him in death on December 26, 2017.
Byron served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 and was stationed in Germany as an ambulance driver and medic.
He was a lifelong member of the First Mennonite Church in Berne and was a longtime usher. He served many years at the MCC Meat Canner.
Byron graduated from Monroe High School in 1949. He worked on the family farm until he was drafted into the Army. Coming home from the service, he returned to the family farm as a full-time dairy farmer until the 1965 Palm Sunday tornado leveled the farm. After the tornado, he continued to grain farm. In January of 1966, he started at CTS in Berne working his way through the ranks as a quality control technician, lead technician, group leader, and then on to senior quality control foreman of the department. Byron retired after 30 years of service.
He enjoyed mowing his yard and in the woods. He was still mowing his yard up until a few months ago. Also, he enjoyed gardening and loved watching sports. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and would even cook for them.
Byron is survived by his daughter, Becky (Brock) Zehr of Fort Wayne, Indiana; son, Tom Liechty of Decatur, Indiana; son, Rick (June) Liechty of Berne, Indiana; son, Jeff (Cheryl) Liechty of Berne, Indiana; sister, Barbara Liechty of Berne, Indiana; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Nicholas Liechty; and brother, Vernon Liechty.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at the First Mennonite Church in Berne, Indiana with Pastor Jeff Linthicum and Pastor Jim Schwartz officiating. Burial will follow at M.R.E. Cemetery with Military Honors being rendered by the American Legion Post #468 in conjunction with the United States Army.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at the First Mennonite Church in Berne.
Preferred memorials can be given to the MCC Meat Canner.
