Betty L. Liechty, 93, of Berne, Indiana was called peacefully to her heavenly home on Saturday morning, December 16, 2023, surrounded by her family at Swiss Village in Berne.
She was born on Saturday, August 30, 1930, at home in rural Geneva, Indiana to the late John S. and Florence E. (Schwartz) Steiner. She was united in marriage to Christian J. “Chris” Liechty on November 6, 1955, at Cross Evangelical Reformed Church in Berne, Indiana and Chris preceded her in death on Sunday, June 17, 2012.
Betty was a member of the First Mennonite Church in Berne, Indiana. Throughout her life she remained active in church activities from teaching Sunday School at Cross United Church of Christ, teaching at the Berne Bible School, taking Sunday school attendance, and being a longtime supporter of the Meat Canner.
She was a 1948 graduate of Hartford Township High School. Following graduation, Betty began her tenure with the Service Store. She later began catering for the Palmer House in Berne and then additionally served breakfast at the Palmer House for many years until retiring to help care for her husband. Throughout her life, she was very involved alongside her husband, Chris, with his Fuel Delivery Business helping with bookwork and even occasionally delivering fuel. Although, the most important job to Betty was being a mother and raising her family.
Betty’s hands were rarely still, she was a talented seamstress and enjoyed completing intricate needlepoint work. In many ways a natural nurturer, she spent countless hours tending to her garden and flowers over the years. Betty provided many with delicious meals and she thoroughly enjoyed baking and cooking. In her quiet time, she could be found immersed in puzzles or reading a good book.
She is survived by her son, Mike Liechty of Geneva, Indiana; daughter, Audrey (Dan) Chapman of Carmel, Indiana; daughter, Lori (Jud) Myers of Berne, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Bryn (Campbell) Vertesi, Jordan (Katherine) Chapman, Joshua (Abby) Chapman, Justin (Abby) Chapman, Nicholis (Hannah) Myers, Abby Myers, and Jessica Myers; five great-grandchildren; and two nephews, Randy (Mary Ann) Steiner and Brian (Suzie) Steiner.
Betty was preceded in death by a son, Bradley J. Liechty; daughter-in-law, Elaine S. Liechty; and brother, Robert W. “Bob” Steiner.
A funeral service for Betty will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at the First Mennonite Church in Berne, Indiana with Pastor Jim Schwartz and Marie Nussbaum officiating. Burial will follow at M.R.E. Cemetery of Berne, Indiana.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 26, 2023, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Yager-Kirchhofer Chapel in Berne, Indiana, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Preferred memorials can be given to the MCC Meat Canner or Heart to Heart Hospice.
