Bernard "Barney" P. Johnston

Bernard P. “Barney” Johnston, 92, of Monroeville, Indiana passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

He was born on July 2, 1927 in Monroeville, Indiana the son of the late Roy D. Johnston and the late Emma (Bowers) Johnston. Barney was united in marriage to Charlotte M. Kees on June 28, 1952 in St. Rose Catholic Rectory in Monroeville, Indiana and she preceded him in death on August 26, 2013.

He proudly served his country during WWII enlisting in 1945 with the United States Army Air Corps and being honorably discharged following the war.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #420 in Monroeville, and the Eagles Lodge #3164 in New Haven.

Barney retired from International Harvester in 1984 with 22 years of service. He then went to work for Strick Corporation where he retired again in 1992 following 8 ½ years of service.

Barney was a “proud American,’ who lived for his country. The American Flag was his first love. He loved spending time with is grandkids, great-grandkids, and great-great-grandkids. Barney also enjoyed camping at Jellystone Park and Resort in Pierceton, Indiana with his family and friends. Any time four people gathered together, it was time to play Euchre… there was no other game to play. He loved wood working even though he proclaimed he wasn’t a carpenter. In 1954, he built the house that he and his wife lived in throughout their marriage and he continued to live in until his time of death.

Survivors include two sons, Ricky L. (Charlene) Johnston of New Haven, Indiana and Kevin P. (Carrie) Johnston of Columbia City, Indiana; sister, Delores P. Shaffer of Bryan, Ohio; brother, Harry (Mary) Johnston of Fort Wayne, Indiana; four grandchildren, Sharri Johnston, Tammi McCann, Nathan Johnston, & Jeremy (Cori) Johnston; six great-grandchildren, Sabrina Johnston, Jordan Johnston, Austin Johnson, Leah McCann, Madison Johnston and Mackenzie Johnston; and one great-great-grandchild, Baylee Jean Johnston.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Roy Jr, Joseph D., Frederick W., Ralph R., Robert and David E. Johnston; three sisters, Mary Ellen Bowman, Catherine G. Marquardt and Mildred J. Ternet; and daughter-in-law, Leisa Johnston.

Friends will be received from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville. Due to guidelines established by the State of Indiana in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be allowing up to 25 people in the funeral home at a time. We appreciate your cooperation.

Interment will follow in the Monroeville Memorial Cemetery with Military Graveside Services to be conducted by the American Legion Post #420 in Monroeville.

Preferred memorials can be given to the American Legion Post #420, Monroeville EMS, or the Monroeville Fire Department.
