Richard L. Miller, 79 years old of Decatur, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2008 in the Adams Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. He was born on Monday, April 15, 1929 the son of the late Herman L. Miller and the late Rosina (Graft) Miller. He married Alma M. Williams on October 1, 1950 in Zion Lutheran Church, Friedheim. Richard graduated from Monmouth High School in 1948 and from Reppert School of Auctioneering in 1976. He had worked as a farmer and was a bus driver for nine years and had previously been employed at Rea Magnet Wire and Hoosier Wire Die. Richard was an auctioneer and realtor for 30 years associated with Wiegman Auctioneers, Bauermeister-Vinson & Miller Auctioneers and then Town & Country Auctioneers. Richard was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, Friedheim and served as the first chairman on the Wyneken School Board. He was a former Preble Township Trustee for eight years and served on the Adams County Council for twelve years. He also served on the Township Advisory Board and was a member of the Indiana Auctioneers Association and Realtors Association. He enjoyed interacting with and helping people in the auction business. Richard loved his family. He enjoyed sports and was a longtime softball pitcher and also coached the women's softball team at Friedheim.. Surviving are his wife, Alma M. Miller of Decatur, two daughters, Carolyn (Rex) Journey of Bryant and Ruth (Jim) Heckman of Decatur, son, Dave (Deb) Miller of Hoagland, brother, Albert Miller of New Haven, six grandchildren; Wes (Kate) Journay, Brian Journay, Josh Miller, Jason (Ashley) Miller, Drew Heckman, & Kari Heckman and one great-grandchild, Abigail Journay. Preceding Richard in death were one granddaughter, Katie Heckman, four sisters; Velma Franke, Josephine Black, Marilyn Lattimer & Shelva Sides and two brothers, Melvin & Roland Miller. A prayer service will be held at 10:15 a.m. Thursday in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church, Friedheim with Pastor Daniel Dahling officiating. Interment will follow in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Friedheim. Friends will be received from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 1 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur. Preferred memorials are to Zion Lutheran Church Building Fund, Wyneken School or the donor's choice.
