Alejo Romero, 74 years of age, of Decatur, Indiana, passed away at 10:08 a.m. on Tuesday, January 31, 2006 in the Parkview Memorial Hospital located in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His death was due to multiple complications and was unexpected. Alejo was born on July 17, 1931 in Crystal City, Texas the son of the late Samuel Romero and the late Benacia (Nuez) Romero. He married Viola Margot Avila on August 26, 1953 in Crystal City, Texas and she survives. Alejo was a member of the Decatur Church of Christ; VFW Post #6236; Elks Lodge #993; Adams Post #43; former president of UMA (United Mexican-Americans). He played Minor League Baseball and had received a scholarship form Sol Ross University in Texas. Alejo was a Korean War Veteran, serving as Senior Jet Engine Mechanic in the Strategic Air Command in the United States Air Force. Alejo retired from General Electric in 1989 after 34 years of service where he was a tool and die welder and maintenance department. Alejo is survived by his wife, Viola Romero of Decatur, Indiana; daughter, Lori Rodriguez of Decatur, Indiana; son, Russell (Linda) Romero of Cecil, Ohio; son, Robert Romero of Decatur, Indiana; brother, Ezekial Romero of Crystal City, Texas; sister, Elizabeth (Carlos) Avila of Crystal City, Texas; sister, Naomi (Alejo) Pea of Crystal City, Texas; sister, Minerva Espinosa of Turlock, California; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Alejo was preceded in death by one son, Ricky L. Romero (November 1, 2005) and two brothers, Johnny and Salvador Romero. Funeral services will be held at 12:000 Noon Friday, February 3, 2006 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Brandon officiating. Interment will follow in the Beery Cemetery. Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2006, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2006 and from 10:30 a.m. to service time on Wednesday in the Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, Indiana. Preferred memorials are to the donor's choice.
