Herbert L. Mailand, 87 years old of Decatur, Indiana, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2009 in the Adams Memorial Hospital. He was born on Saturday, February 4, 1922 in Adams County, Indiana the son of the late Charles C. Mailand and the late Bertha (Bublitz) Mailand. Herbert was a graduate of Monmouth High School. He was a lifetime active member of St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen, where he was involved in Men's Choir and held various offices in the church. He was also involved in the Coin Club of Decatur and the Adams County Historical Society. He retired in 1987 from General Electric in Fort Wayne, Indiana with 45 years of service and was also a longtime Adams County farmer. Surviving are his sister, Mrs. Richard C. (Margaret) Rice of Decatur, niece, Cindy (Ron) Holt of Decatur, nephew, Duane (Jeanne) Rice of Boca Raton, Florida, and niece, Janine Hicks of Decatur. Preceding Herbert in death were his brother, Fredrick W. Mailand and his niece, Sheila Hoeppner. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2009 in the St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen with Pastor John Dreyer officiating. Interment will follow in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery , Bingen. Friends will be received from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. & 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, August 31 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Preferred memorials are to St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen, or Worship for Shut-Ins.
