Herman M. Bittner

Herman M. Bittner, 96 years old of Decatur, Indiana, passed away at 6:13 p.m. on Monday, September 20, 2010 in the Woodcrest Nursing Center. Herman was born on Monday, November 3, 1913 in Adams County, Indiana the son of the late Charles Bittner and the late Emma (Bieberich) Bittner. He married Gertrude Buuck on April 10, 1937 and she passed away on September 10, 2008. Herman was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Preble where he served on the church building committee. He was a member of the American Legion Post #43 where he served as past commander, was a trustee for twenty years, served as assistant membership chairman and was a service officer for the 4th District. He served his country in the United States Marines during World War II. Herman worked for Yost Construction and Prestress Services full-time for forty years and part-time for twenty-two years. Herman retired from Prestress at the age of 84 and he retired from farming at the age of 88. Surviving are his daughter-in-law, Carol Bittner of Decatur, Indiana and sister, Leota Jensen of Elmhurst, Illinois. Preceding Herman in death were one son, Larry Bittner, one daughter, Susan Black and one brother, Alton Bittner. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 24, 2010 in the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Preble with Pastor Daniel Dahling officiating. Interment will follow in the St Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery, Preble. Friends will be received from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Thursday, September 23, 2010 in the Woodcrest Chapel and from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, Indiana and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Preferred memorials are to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Preble or Family Hospice of Northeast Indiana.
