Palmer L. Schwartz

Palmer L. Schwartz, 82 years old of Decatur, Indiana, passed away at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at his residence. Palmer was born on Friday, January 6, 1928 in Adams County, Indiana the son of the late Ora and Cora (Cook) Stopher and was adopted by the late Noah D. Schwartz and Catherina (Nussbaum) Schwartz He married Helen E. Roehm on June 21, 1953 and she survives. Palmer was baptized on March 15, 1953 and confirmed on March 19, 1953 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Schumm, by Pastor W.P. Kuhlberg; and his confirmation verse was I Timothy 1:15. Palmer served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Palmer was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Schumm in rural Willshire, Ohio where he had held many offices of the church; the American Legion Post #43 in Decatur, Indiana; St. Mary's Bluecreek Conservation Club; and an Endowment member of the National Rifle Association. He was an instructor at Bellmont High Power Rifle Team. He had been on the Adams County Reserve Deputy Sheriff Department for 20 years. Palmer was a carpenter since 1945, and was also employed by Adams County as Building Maintenance Supervisor. Surviving are his wife, Helen E. Schwartz of Decatur, Indiana; daughter, Cynthia (Cindy) Schwartz of Decatur, Indiana; son, Gerald (Dana) Schwartz of Berne, Indiana; son, Matthew (Matt)(Shelly) Schwartz of Decatur, Indiana; son, Roger (Christy) Schwartz of Monroeville, Indiana; son, Larry Schwartz of Decatur, Indiana; son, Douglas (Doug)(Briana) Schwartz of Decatur, Indiana; brother, M. Wayne Stopher of LaGrange, Indiana; seventeen grandchildren: Ethan Schorey, Angelique Schorey, Heather Brown, Jeana, Jamie, Jarod, Joshua, Aaron, benjamin, Nicholas, Justin Schwartz, Joshua Beals, Paul, Kalene, Jonathan, Andrew, Emily Schwartz; and two great-grandchildren: Sofia Schwartz, and Taylor Brown. Preceding Palmer in death was one sister, Alice M. McCagg. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 18, 2010 in the Zion Lutheran Church, Schumm with Pastor Jeff Patterson and Pastor Robert Becker officiating. Interment will follow in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Schumm. Military Graveside Services will be conducted by American Legion Post #43 Color Guard of Adams County. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, November 17, 2010 in the Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, Indiana and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Preferred memorials are to Zion Lutheran Church, Schumm or Family Hospice and Palliative Care in Berne, Indiana
