Nancy L. Helm, 68 years old of Decatur, Indiana, passed away on Friday, October 8, 2010 at her sister's residence in Osceola, Indiana. She was born on Sunday, November 9, 1941 in Adams County, Indiana the daughter of the late George D. Helm and the late Kathryn L. (Archbold) Helm. Nancy was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Decatur. She was a member of the United Methodist Women where she served as former President. She was also a member of the choir, part of the prayer ministry at church, and a former Sunday School Teacher. Through her work at church, she became involved with the Jail Ministry at the Adams County Jail. Nancy was a board member of the Decatur Public Library where she was also a longtime Children's Librarian. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association where she had served as treasurer. Nancy earned a B.S. and M.A. in Education from Indiana University - Purdue University, Fort Wayne. She was formerly employed by Gerber's and United Telephone (now Century Link), however; her main occupation was teaching. She retired from teaching at North Adams Community Schools in 2004. She was a long-time Kindergarten teacher at Monmouth Elementary prior to her retirement. Following her retirement she enjoyed travelling the world, visiting places such as Hawaii, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Thailand, China, Japan, and Alaska. Surviving are her sister, Mrs. Hubert (Rev. Dr. Joyce) Kuhn of Osceola, Indiana, sister, Mrs. Ron (Jacque) Potter of Clemmons, North Carolina, sister, Mrs. Rod (Kris) Wolford of Portland, Indiana, brother-in-law, David Spolyar of Kokomo, Indiana, nephews; Chris Spolyar, Matt Spolyar, Patrick Spolyar, Randy Wolford & Tyler Wolford, nieces; Marni Yannaccone, Angi Kuhn, Lesli Kuhn & Carrie Spolyar, great-nephews; Connor Spolyar, Carter Spolyar & Peyton Spolyar and great-nieces; Ashlyn Spolyar, Izora Jane Yannaccone & Carsyn Spolyar. Preceding Nancy in death were a niece, Kati Kuhn and great-niece, Cora Lee Yannaccone. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon Monday, October 11, 2010 in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Martha Lyon officiating. Interment will follow in the Decatur Cemetery. Friends will be received from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, October 10 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Preferred memorials are to First United Methodist Church, Adams County Community Foundation-Cancer Fund or the Elkhart County Hospice.
