D. DuWayne Sorgen, 82, a native and resident of the Monroeville area for most of his life, passed away at 4:25 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon in Parkview Hospital after being stricken at his residence. He had been in failing health for the past three months. Mr. Sorgen was born on August 27, 1926 in Monroeville. He retired in 1994 as a salesman for Roethele Building Company in Fort Wayne with 14 ½ years of service and was also a farmer. Mr. Sorgen was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Monroeville where he was active in the church choir and was a former Sunday School Superintendent. He had also served on the church council. He was a member of the American Legion Post #420 and the V.F.W. #10205, both in Monroeville and was active in the Color Guard. He was a life member of the Korean War Veterans Association and a former member of the Indiana Two Steppers Country Dance Club. He sang in the Monroeville Community Choir and was a member of the Four Presidents Corner Historical Society, the American Quarter Horse Association. In his early years, he had played guitar in a local band. He enjoyed square dancing, drawing and painting pictures. Mr. Sorgen served his country during the Korean Conflict as a PFC in the United States Army and had received the Korean Service medal with four Bronze Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged from the army on October 22, 1959. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Ann Beth Sorgen of Monroeville, two sons, Kevin D. (Mary) Sorgen and Keith A. Sorgen, both of rural Monroeville, one daughter, Mrs. Brian (Karen L.) Hoeppner of Woodburn, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant sister, Madonna Sorgen. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 30, 2009 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel, Monroeville from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2009 in the St. Marks Lutheran Church, Monroeville with Rev. William Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Monroeville Memorial Cemetery with full military graveside services. Preferred memorials are to the St. Marks Lutheran Church, the Monroeville E.M.S or the Monroeville Volunteer Fire Department.
