Lester W. Aumann, 90 years old of Decatur, Indiana, passed away at 7:20 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2012 in the Woodcrest Nursing Center located in Decatur. Lester was born on Sunday, January 22, 1922 in Adams County, Indiana the son of the late William C. Aumann and the late Della (Busick) Aumann. He married the late Evelyn L. Thieme on August 10, 1947 in Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Decatur, and she passed away on July 27, 2012. Lester was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church-Bingen; the men's club of the church; and American Legion Post#43, Decatur. Lester served his country during World War II in the United States Army. He received the Purple Heart; 5 Battle stars; Victory in Europe Ribbon; and participated in the Allied Invasion of Normandy in France, called D-Day. Lester was a retired farmer and was self-employed in home construction for 37 years. Lester greatly enjoyed his family and spending time with nature. Additionally, he never met a stranger and took pleasure in meeting and talking with people, both on the construction site and life in general. In later times, he and Evelyn moved to Woodcrest where he continued meeting people and enjoyed playing cards and putting puzzles together. Surviving are his son, Thomas Aumann of Decatur, IN; daughter, Kayleen S. (Rick) Ellinger of Greensburg, IN; daughter, Janice (Tim) Grover of Decatur, IN; sister, Irene (Lorenz) Steele of Decatur, IN; sister, Glenys Counterman of Hoagland, IN; nine grandchildren: Jeremy Aumann, Kellie Hadi, Brad Aumann, Shane McBride, Chad McBride, Crista Elias, Michael Grover, Tyler Ellinger, and Zach Ellinger; and sixteen great-grandchildren. Preceding Lester in death were two sons, Timothy W. & Ricky L. Aumann; and one grandchild, David Aumann. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 12, 2012 in the St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen with Pastor Peter Brock officiating. Interment will follow in the St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery- Bingen. Friends will be received from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2012 in the Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Friends and family will also be received on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m to 10:30 a.m. at the Woodcrest Porter Auditorium.
