Dan R. Kirkendall, 71 years old of Decatur, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at his residence. He was born on Monday, March 10, 1941 in Indianapolis, Indiana and he married Carolyn R. Ontrop on July 8, 1978 in Portland, Indiana. Dan served his country in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Monroeville where he was a former Eucharist minister. Dan was a graduate of Western High School in Russiaville, Indiana and a graduate of Purdue University with a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture and a Masters in Education. He retired in January of 2004 as a teacher with the Diocese of Fort Wayne - South Bend with twenty years of service. Surviving are his wife, Carolyn R. Kirkendall of Decatur; daughter, Sarah R. Kirkendall of Kalamazoo, Michigan; sister, Marcia L. (George) Penry of Greenfield, Indiana; and brother, Greg Duncan of Sharpsville, Indiana. Preceding Dan in death was a brother, James Snyder. A prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2013 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel, Monroeville followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian burial in the St. Rose Catholic Church with Fr. Joseph D'Souza officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Rose Catholic Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel, Monroeville. A Rosary Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Preferred memorials are Masses to the church or St. Joseph Catholic School Centenary Project.
