Vivian C. (Gresley) Hisner, 91, died at 5:05 p.m. on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at the Adams Heritage Nursing Home in Monroeville. Born on March 15, 1922 in the family home in rural Hoagland, she was the daughter of Charles H. and Ida Ruth (Barfell) Gresley. Vivian graduated from Hoagland High School in 1940. She worked at GE in her early adult years and played pitcher and first base for both GE and Berghoff women's softball teams. On August 24, 1944 she married Gerald G. Hisner and lived in Hoagland for 70 years. Together, they owned and operated the Shell Service Station in Hoagland for more than 20 years. After retirement they spent their summers at their home in Marcell, MN until 1997. Gerald passed away on October 22, 2007. Vivian was proud of her farm heritage and her five older brothers whom she referred to as "five good boys". She was a beautiful seamstress and knitter, but also enjoyed baseball and was an avid IU basketball fan. In her early and middle years one of her favorite activities was raccoon hunting in the woods around Hoagland. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers: W. Herman, John, Carl, and Emmet Gresley. Surviving would include her brother Dale Gresley and his wife Gertrude of Monroeville; brother-in-law H. Parnell Hisner and wife Ann of Ft. Wayne; sister-in-law Garnet Hisner of Hoagland and numerous nieces and nephews. Vivian was thankful for the support and visitation from the Hoagland community and her fellow members of Antioch Lutheran Church. A special thank-you to her neighbor, Roger Holmes, for mowing the grass and maintaining her property as an extension of his own for many years. Funeral services for Vivian will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel, 111 South Water Street in Monroeville with Deaconess Cheryl Schmidt, Heartland Hospice Chaplain officiating. Burial will follow next to her husband at IOOF Cemetery in New Haven. Friends and family will be received on Sunday, November 10, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. thru 4:00 p.m. in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel, Monroeville and one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to the Antioch Lutheran Church in Hoagland or the Heartland Hospice.
