Eugene George Schlemmer, 81 years old of Decatur, Indiana, passed away at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24, 2013 in the Woodcrest Nursing Center located in Decatur. Gene was born on Saturday, April 23, 1932 in Van Wert County, Ohio the son of the late George Schlemmer and the late Lillian (Lehrman) Schlemmer. He married Rose Marie Scaer on October 5, 1952 in St. John's Redemer Church in rural Convoy, Ohio and she survives. Gene was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving his church in many offices. Gene was a successful, lifetime farmer; starting Schlemmer Farms in 1971, which is now owned and operated by his family. Surviving are his wife, Rose Marie Schlemmer of Decatur, IN; son, Kenneth (Rebecca) Schlemmer of Convoy, OH; son, Douglas (Patricia) Schlemmer of Monroeville, IN; son, Herbert (Laura) Schlemmer of Convoy, OH; 6 grandchildren: Kenny & Chad Schlemmer; Mandy Fuleki; Brian Schlemmer; Tessa Long; & Kara Beth Schlemmer; and 7 great-grandchildren: Logan, Paxton, Levi, Deagan Schlemmer; Maya & Cassidy Schlemmer; Ava Roemer, Bentley & Braydon Schlemmer; and 2 additional great-grandchildren expected in April. Preceding Eugene in death were 3 sons: Kirby in infancy, Gary in 1976; Joseph in 1986; one sister, Francile Sutton. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 28, 2013 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor David Koeneman officiating. Interment will follow in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Friends will be received from 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2013 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, IN and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Preferred memorials are to Immanuel Lutheran Church or St. Peter-Immanuel Lutheran School.
