Richard C. Rice

Richard C. Rice, 86 years old of Decatur, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born on Monday, October 17, 1927 in Adams County, Indiana the son of the late Ralph W. Rice and the late Helen G. (Chapman) Rice. He married Marguerite G. Mailand on June 6, 1953 in St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen. Richard served his country in the United States Air National Guard 122nd Tactical Fighter Wing in Fort Wayne and rose to the rank of Captain. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen and the Men's Club at the church. He served as a former President of the church congregation and also held several offices in the church. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #43 in Decatur. Richard retired in 1988 as a Company Plant Manager of Dana Corporation in Syracuse, Indiana after 40 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Marguerite G. Rice of Decatur; daughter, Cynthia L. (Ronnie) Holt of Decatur; son, Duane A. (Jeanne) Rice of Boca Raton, Florida; daughter, Janine K. Hicks of Decatur; and sister, Gwendolyn L. Ohmit of Indianapolis. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Jesse L. (Kristen) Holt; Casey C. (Maybelle) Holt; Jenny A. (Justin) Beaulieu; Jamie L. Holt; Kelly Rice; Nolan Rice; Erin (Dan) MacDonald; & Cody Hoeppner and seven great-grandchildren. Preceding Richard in death were a daughter, Sheila R. Hoeppner and a brother, James L. Rice. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 10, 2014 in the St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen with Rev. Peter Brock officiating. Interment will follow in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Bingen with Military Graveside Services to be conducted by the American Legion Post #43 Color Guard. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 & 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, January 9 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Preferred memorials are to Worship for Shut-Ins or St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen.
