Helen A. Rydell, 90 years old of Decatur, Indiana, passed away at 5:32 on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at her residence. Helen was born on Tuesday, September 2, 1924 in Casey, Iowa the daughter of the late Ira E. Hiscocks and the late Lulu M. (Kistler) Hiscocks. She married the late E. Eugene Rydell on May 20, 1945 in Los Angeles, California and he passed away on November 23, 2008. Helen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Decatur and the Mary Martha Circle of the church. She was also a long-time member of the Psi-Iota-Xi Sorority. Helen also enjoyed playing golf as a member of the Decatur Women's Golf League where she was presented the Ethel Mae Sanman Award. Helen enjoyed playing cards, golf, making food for the grandchildren, quilting, and watching football. One of her favorite activities was attending the many sporting events in which her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were involved. Helen was a homemaker to her husband, children, and grandchildren. After her children were grown, Helen volunteered for many organizations, including the Food Bank and Meals-on-Wheels. Surviving are her daughter, Judith Ann (Thomas) Mettler of Hoagland, IN; daughter, Barbara L. (John) Anderson of The Villages, FL; son, William P. (Bonnie) Rydell of Allison Park, PA; brother, Rex (Marian) Hiscocks of Irvine, CA; sister, Ruth V. Reighard of Newport News, VA; 6 grandchildren: Laura Brazill; Mark Cook; Chad Isch; Leslie Salway; Sarah Irwin; Emily Conneely; 12 great-grandchildren: Abbey Eicher; Alyssa Eichhorn; Austin Eichhorn; Katlyn Cook; Benjamin Eichhorn; Madison Cook; Megan Salway; Alex Cook; Brooklyn Salway; Makenzie Cook; Adelyn Conneely; Elise Irwin; 6 step-grandchildren: Deborah Mettler; Melanie Anderson; Mandi Papacek; Carrie Mettler; Christina Vengilio; Bob Anderson; 8 step-great-grandchildren: Lyndsey Mettler; Alexis Feasel; TJ Feasel; Evan Anderson; Lois Mae Anderson; Jack Anderson; Clara Papacek; Joey Mettler. Preceding Helen in death were 2 brothers: Dale R. Hiscocks and Ted E. Hiscocks. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2014 in the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Marcia Cline officiating. Interment will follow in the Decatur Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 11, 2014 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, IN and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Preferred memorials are to First Presbyterian Church or Family Life Care-Hospice.
