Charles E. Hamrick, 89 years old of Decatur, Indiana, passed away at 8:35 a.m. on Friday, December 5, 2014 in the Adams Woodcrest. Charles was born on Monday, January 26, 1925 in Adams County, Indiana the son of the late Samuel L. Hamrick and the late Nora V. (Frank) Hamrick. He married the late Ethel M. Hamrick on September 1, 1951 and she passed away on May 26, 2012. Charles was member of the Cornerstone Community Church in Decatur (formerly the Decatur Missionary Church). Charles was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II in the occupational force in Germany following the end of the war. Charles enjoyed watching NASCAR and his favorite driver was Jeff Gordon. Baseball was a very important part of Charles' life... and the Cleveland Indians were his favorite team. He enjoyed catching up and sharing baseball stories with the gang at McDonald's every morning and the West End for lunch Monday through Friday. But in addition to his hobbies, his greatest joy was taking care of his loving wife, Ethel, checking on her every day during her 16 years of illness. Charles retired in July of 1983 after 22 years of service with Navistar in Ft. Wayne, IN. Following his retirement, Charles worked Myers Furniture, The Schaefer Wholesale Company, Gerber's Supermarket, and Bob's TV. Surviving are his son, David A. (Linda) Hamrick of Marion, OH; son, Dale E. (Marie) Hamrick of New Haven, IN; daughter, Judith A. (Mark) Masterson of Beavercreek, OH; daughter, Joyce K. Giltrap of Knoxville, TN; brother, Clarence (Kate) Hamrick of Willshire, OH; brother, Duane (Jeannie) Hamrick of Rockford, OH; sister, Norma (Lindy) Lybarger of North Manchester, IN; sister, Carolyn (Tom) Baker of Celina, OH; 8 grandchildren: Sarah Dickey; Zachary Hamrick; Daniel Hamrick; Aaron Hamrick; April Carson; Mandy Rogers; Justin Masterson; Jon Masterson; and 14 great-grandchildren. Preceding Charles in death were 2 brothers, Paul & Victor Hamrick; sister, Evelyn Luginbill; son-in-law, William R. Giltrap Jr. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2014 in the Cornerstone Community Church with Rev. Floyd Vieth and Rev. Ken Hogg officiating. Interment will follow in the Decatur Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2014 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, IN and one hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday. Preferred memorials are to Cornerstone Community Church.
